From way way back. Modern bills haven't been paper for a long time. For example, American bills are made of cotton and Canada makes them from plastic. Coins are still metal and if we can reasonably assume that matter made by Pokemon sticks around, then payday making metal coins would make sense.
The only issue would be why there isn't a difference between normal coins and payday coins. Unless that's how they are made.
I imagine the logistics for trying to wash an immense amount of Payday coins would be crazy so the government doesn't care if your average trainer tries to use some payday coins but if millions of dollars worth start flooding in, then it becomes an issue and the offender gets the ESCALATION smack down.

Another thought, how would someone tell the difference between payday, make it rain, and normal coins. Payday is normal, MiR is steel. Both are considered valid currency. Do the coins lose their typing after a while? If I throw a coin at ghost pokemon, will it effect them, is that how they check for counterfeiting?
Maybe regulations haven't caught up with Gholdengo coins and when they do, the species is banned from using the move MiR. Which would be a funny reason to explain why the pokemon gets potentially dexit'd from a future generation.

It's not that complicated, Cynthia's sister exists and you can talk to her, she just isn't a major character, saying that it's a "filler invention" doesn't mean jack and shit if it's in the final product. If it's in the game, it's canon, there's no way to argue against it, you can't say that the Hiker inside Rock Tunnel doesn't count as a character in a Pokemon game, he exists, just isn't very important.

The ones I've tried go into "my protagonist is the strongest, smartest, bestest ever" really quickly which is not what's potentially interesting about the concept.

the last time i actually liked a "gym leader" type fic 100% start to finish was one of those fics that made ash accept the frontier brain offer he got in the anime, but even then it mostly focused on the process of becoming a brain and only did a handful of matches at the very end so i don't think it would be what you're looking for

I've got a character that's about to make an incredible revelation about their true identity during a tense moment, and in a general sense, would you prefer as a reader:

I hand out redemptions like they are candy. I would redeem every single one of my villains if I thought of a way to do it realistically. But not all my villains would accept redemption as an option.

Now that I think about it, redemption is actually a big theme in some of my stories. Though I guess its less redemption and more explorations of mercy. Of noble heroes who have to face the question of at what point does mercy become an act of neglect against those who could be hurt from their choice to show clemency. Of what crime is greater between killing an individual and denying them a chance at redemption, and sparing someone who goes on to cause further tragedies? Can a man both call himself good while having to make that choice, or is goodness the privilege of those who are never given the option of fighting?

Rotom Phones are a software program parading around in a Rotom's corpse, they can't do shit. They breed them by the hundreds of thousands and make them super retarded, practically braindead, and then fuse them with a pokedex, eliminating any sense of self and allowing the program to take over. They're classified as objects and not as living beings so breaking one isn't considered murder and you can sell them or throw them in a landfill if you feel like it. As they don't have souls however they are unable to channel any kind of type moves and are limited to maybe holding things or protecting the user from a fall.

Mecha genre story set in the world of Pokemon. To make it more Pokemon-themed, Pokemon themselves will be integrated into or be the big bots.

You could do a Super Robot-style mecha where the robot is piloted by a human and Pokemon working in sync. You could also do something blending in a little Kamen Rider by having a base mecha with a device that allows it to either slot in the essences of Pokemon, or Pokemon themselves, to acquire different weapon sets for battle.

If you wanted to go more Real Robot with it, you could have different classes of mecha be based off of either specific Pokemon, or Types, and draw inspiration from them more indirectly.

And then there's the funniest but most fucked option of actually just doing a whole-ass Gundam fanfiction, but it happened in the Pokemon world, so Zeon dropped a colony on Orre, or Amuro murdered the SHIT out of Sabrina when she got in the way of his duel to the death with Char.

In the slop I'm writing the protagonist finished his journey, eventually won the conference and challenged the E4 and realized he's barely E4 level because he's too much of a jack of all trades in the sense that he and his Pokemon aren't overspecialized for 6v6 singles enough to make it to the Champion. He was speccing into too much utility and doubles for his battle related security job, and half his Pokemon just aren't powerhouses, and their training wasn't specialized (EVs all over the place, though not mentioned by name).
