What made them so much more memorable than the rest of the series?
Why can I remember almost every line of text, city layout, route layout, trainer location, TM location years later but never anything about RSE and DPP?

Because Masuda is an objectively bad game designer and wasn't capable of improving on these games, just adding more to the franchise identity. If he wasn't, these games would've been forgotten by now or at least treated as humble beginnings

Gen III was the punching bag and laughing stock for a good decade before ORAS made it cool to like Gen III again so they have to be the ones that staunchly defend their childhood sunk cost franchise piece of shit as something special when it was made for the sake of giving the higher ups more Pokemon. I think it is because we were younger. Kid brains absorb info really well. The pokerap also encouraged memorization. There were also less pokemon and catching them all seem hard but possible. Eventually there got to be too many different pokemon, making each one less special and with catching them all just about impossible, I don't have reason to remember all of their names.

Game Freak wasn't trying to make a profit off of Gen I, they were just trying to get out Tajiri's neat little idea he had. It took them fucking 5 years to make. If they wanted profit they could've kept churning out smaller titles like they were between 1990~1995

Masuda's game design philosophy has always been to replicate what's been done with the new being tweaks and madlibs or focusing entirely on a new thing the team learned to program because if it can't be implemented it needs to be cut immediately or else it'll miss the due date. Every Pokemon game he's worked on was rushed just to please daddy Nintendo so they don't get mad at Game Freak for hogging the rights to their most successful IP. His ass should've stuck to music

I remember far more about gens 2 and 4 than I do about gens 1 and 3.

Gen 1 is unfinished dogshit that doesn't even work as it was intended to. It's basically a beta build for Gen 2. I say this as someone who played Blue version on release when I was like 6. I have played them since. I cannot in honesty say I would ever touch RBGY ever again when FRLG exist and are superior games in every single way.

TPC didn't exist in a world when Gen I was made and Todd Howard's entire legacy was him trying to prove nerds wrong. He didn't start becoming a hack until his games got way too big thanks to the hellscape of AAA development (Skyrim was literally the breaking point and he has only worked on one game since its release)

i know the series is mostly geared for kids now but it would have been so nice to have more of this, i am so tired of the utopia society. in gen 1, you were a kid venturing out into an urban world, and sure it was fun but you just as often found corruption and perversion on the streets of kanto. hell, even FRLG fuck this up immensely.
