Genuinely a goldmine of potential, not sure why they haven't done it yet.

Only issue is the censors probably wouldn't allow anything less than 100% squeaky clean, so no characters significantly older or younger than you, or power gaps like students and teachers.

I don't think I've ever engaged with this mechanic but I also wouldn't be against them potentially revisiting it again at some point down the line.

Nah, gen 5's flop proves all that gen's ideas are non viable. Dating mechanics went the same way as gems and triple battles for good reason. If only the Unova Pokedex got the same treatment.

A relationship mechanic would be fine. Hang out with characters, increase bond. They kinda did something like that in Scarlet where you could become friends with teachers but it was half-assed. Quarter-assed even.
They should avoid it being explicitly dating/romantic because that encourages freak behavior.

I read that as "dating a mechanic" for a second and got really excited, only to re-read it and lose my enthusiasm.

It's not a game mechanic, it's a sidequest. You might aswell call the basic summary of the story a mechanic
