Gamefreak is just a weird studio. You have literal old money Ishihara whose uncle and probably father were Yakuza, a college dropout music composer turned game director because of how much dirt he had on everyone (Masuda), and a well-intended kid who just wanted to make a game about collecting bugs and now doesn't want to touch the Pokémon franchise with a 2-mile pole (Tajiri). Then there is software engineer Iwata who had a known personal beef with Junichi Masuda, and who had to come in and save Gamefreak twice despite that not being his job.

I just wonder what type of shit Masuda and Ishihara did to irreversibly ruin this studio. Masuda always had this bad motherfucker aura to him, so much that no one ever leaked a single text file during his tenure. He was Gamefreak's Stalin. Things fell apart the nanossecond he phoned in the BDSP remakes, then went to work in TPC filling lawsuits to fuck over Palworld.

Him taking over from Gen III onward forced Game Freak to become a full on production studio and that killed basically any side projects from ever getting attention. I wouldn't be surprised if he deliberately manipulated everyone to make Drill Dozer fail to force Ken into his role as "The Pokemon Artist" and not like the Hoennfags' cries of "Gen II was intended to fail" because clearly Gen II being forced to be in a more "marketable" direction is 100% Masuda's idea trying to make sure Pokemon was not a fad. Nintendo was never excited about Gamefreak, Iwata could probably see the shit flying towards the fan the second he saw Masuda. At some point their studio was Ishihara's apartment, that some anon here once joked that it used to be a porn stage that got busted for doing illegal shit.

GameFreak doesn't want to be associated with little girls wearing lingerie anymore, but that is how Masuda and Ishihara paid bills (at least Masuda did, Ishihara is just straight up old crime money).

That's been Game Freak for way too fucking long, Masuda barely got Gen 3-6 remotely reasonable and every other game has been some degree of fucked despite his best efforts (him restarting Gen 2's development and finishing it in less than a year, or the assets for Gen 6 being somewhat future proofed). That's not to say Masuda is perfect either, DP is a disaster engine wise if you look just below the surface, while XY is similarly a disaster but design wise instead.

Listen, Ohmori is an orphan and definitely awful, but I don’t know about the CP stuff. I did get to meet him once, though. I was at my first big boy job and one time they flew Ohmori in for a lecture/pep talk through a translator. I was in the conference room when my boss pulled me aside. Apparantly Ohmori himself chose me to go out and buy him a pouch of Skittles.
