It's unironically never happening. Because of the Mega Flygon story from Nintendo Dream, countless JP fans were inspired to make their own Mega Flygon concepts, so now all the good ideas were stolen by fans, so GameFreak can't design a satisfying Mega Flygon of their own that doesn't fly too close to one of those fan designs, once again resulting in the artist block problem that will scrap Flygon from the equation entirely.

That's like asking for a hypothetical Mega Lurantis to be bug type because its whole thing is that it looks like a bug when it isn't. Even outside of competitive viability (do people even use it in competitive play anyway?) bug/dragon is overall a worse type combination for Flygon.

I used Lurantis in my example because it has possible inspirations from the orchid mantis (and flower) and yet you don't see anyone saying that it should be a bug type. ...yet. Trapinch and its evolutionary line have design inspirations from antlions (and possibly a few other things) yet people want its type to change. How is this not a sufficient equivalent?
