HGSS was the first time I was truly disappointed by a mainline Pokemon game but was in denial about it. Then with BW I realized I was going through something nigh unplayable. However it wasn't until SM that I abandoned any hope of Pokemon ever being good again.

What did you find most disappointing about HGSS?

In my case, I could say it's the forced railroading or Shota Kageyama's remixes, but the most emblematic of HGSS's flaws for me is how overly childish it feels.
Yes, Pokemon has always been a kid's franchise but HGSS was the first time it felt like the overall tone of the game hit a new low in terms of target age. GSC, RSE, FRLG, and DPPt had a tone that felt consistent with each other whereas HGSS felt alien with how all of the franchise's edge so far had been completely sanded down to fit the new tone they were going for. Even the Sugimori art for HGSS felt different to his art for DPPt.

The forced railroading, the way the remixes sound, it all makes sense once you see the extreme childishness is the root of it all.

Look, I grew up on HGSS. I can't confidently say that I like it because I only have faint memories and last played it in 2014, but I don't have any bad memories beyond me first getting into cheating and completely wrecking my reward system for videogames. That said, I like the older Pokemon games too, and Voltorb flip was bullshit.

The changes in gens 4 and 5 were annoying, but I got over it since I knew I could still get those things from other games. I got demoralized with gens 6-8 due to their lack in inspiration and quality, but I still had hope they'd turn things around eventually. Gen 9 was when "never" started entering my mind. I mean, if they really can get away with selling a game that's barely functional on release, why would they ever try to improve?

Unironically got messed up by the late-game level curve
The story/plot wasn't engaging

Finishing it didn't feel as satisfying as Platinum did, and I knew that but couldn't understand why until many years later discussing the games on here
