Sapphire is basically Princess Mononoke. That film was most heavily inspired by Buddhist literature but Japanese religion is a loose mix of Shintoism/Buddhism/Taoism (I think) anyway. The film's original idea was also a Beauty and the Beast romance but it got changed.

Since they actually went with a Tarzan boy character, I just realized that a dynamic between Ash and Sapphire would basically be the 23rd movie, but with Koko replaced with a girl who looks like May. Honestly, while the greentext had RSE-era Sapphire switch places with RS AniMay, it'd be kinda funny if ORAS or post-ORAS Sapphire just dropped into one of Ash's later journeys or even post-JN Ash's aimless travels, meaning Ash seeing a May-lookalike would be even more unexpected than when he was actually traveling with May. And as for Ruby, encountering a much more experienced coordinator/idol May replacing his Sapphire could cause a quite funny crashout.
