I think the ingame reasons given for these characters being gone feel half-baked, especially considering Lumiose is the cultural mecca of Kalos and the most populated city in the region. Eyelashes can have different colors irl like other anons have said already. I've seen people with really light lashes, some even had a gradient going on.
My issue with eyelashes in nu-Pokemon titles in general is how unnecessarily thick they are. Even the "most natural" black ones sometimes just look like the humans put strange black stuff (not even mascara or any make-up, but some kind of putty) around their eyes. Maybe it's the shading? Dunno. But I don't like it. And I think the lighter options suffer from this design choice.

The trick to Pokemon popularity is simply having main storyline relevance. No matter if early or late. Players having to engage with the character and their story yes or yes no matter what. He's set from that alone. Pokemon players don't play Pokemon games but at the very minimum they complete the "main storyline".
Notice how whenever someone asks "why is X human Pokemon character not popular? They're cute/hot/etc" it's some character whose screentime and relevance is optional, tacked on some side-quest or out of the way thing. People aren't forced to engage with that, so the amount of people who will get to know those characters is minimal by comparison.
A prime example of this "forced engagement" is Ingo and Emmet. Why did they catch fire unlike all the other Battle Facility people? Because you're FORCED to engage with them once. Granted, there's other reasons for those two but I'm sure you get the point I'm trying to make here.

So the truth is, being forced to interact with them in B2W2 is actually something that didn't exist in the previous game, you could play all of BW and catch every single Pokemon without ever coming into contact with Ingo and Emmet if you just didn't give a single shit about the Battle Subway at all. They got wildly popular despite the fact that they're such literally whos in their own game and I think what happened was that Corocoro introduced them and a bunch of artists just went feral because twincest was/is popular with Japanese fujos and their designs just spoke to people with very specific tastes. (In particular I see a lot of overlap with Megaman fans but that's a personal observation.) As for me, I remember finding them really interesting when I first saw their official art and then I was sold once I saw all of the fanart coming out about them. The reason you have to talk to them in B2W2 is probably because they really wanted to pander to this very odd case of a budding fanbase for characters that didn't do much besides look a certain way, talk strangely, and battle you to either potentially fuck up your streak in the battle facility they run or be an obstacle to overcome on your way to collecting BP for the items at the Prize Exchange. The Subway Bosses are particularly notable for being some of the first human characters to get real, actual merch because before Gen 5 human characters getting anything of that sort was basically unheard of. They were standing beside ultra-popular characters like N and Elesa in terms of importance despite having NO role in the story whatsoever. It's a big reason why before PLA people were just baffled about their popularity and always asked why they were popular lol.

like... just that, for the most part... that'd be sick. Something in the middle of GSC and RSE, perhaps more leaning on GSC in terms of legendary involvement in the story. I used to be a huge villainfag (still am for the older gens) but none of the newer villains (save for Volo) really scratched that itch so, dunno. Might as well be absent, I don't care anymore.
Leaks say a game where you "walk between Hoenn and Sinnoh" has been in development and that sounded super-exciting to my Emerald-rotten, Platinum-adoring brain at first glance... Then I remembered it's a nu-Pokemon game (and might get canned anyway now that everyone knows about it) and that excitement was diminished, just like that.
Can't say I cared for Ohmori's approach for characters, either (not that it's bad, I'm just not sad to lose it) so eh.
