Game Freak would never make the origin of Pokemon training take place anywhere else but Kanto. They can save this idea for later and actually work on it instead of just doing PLA again now that they got the autism out of their system with Z-A

Makes sense with the Chikorita - Tepig - Totodile starter set which were completely out of nowhere choices than Snivy, Piplup and Scorbunny more aligned with the Kalos region.

A Legends Johto based off Kyoto would have been epic.

Yeah, I can kinda see why this was scrapped. They were just making Legends Arceus 2. They even made it an Isekai again.
I view the Legends series as GF finally wanting to flex their creative muscles and do something unique and they probably realized they were falling into their usual copy-paste habits with this one.
Arceus was more focused on new exploration/capture mechanics and with ZA they decided to change up the battle system and re-introducing new megas as a way to create hype and even ease people in to the new system.

Let's Go was unironically fun for what it was. It expanded on the story nicely and was the first to do stuff like overworld spawns, riding your own pokemon and remote access to boxes.

Masuda getting a literally who mobile game support studio and telling them they're making mainline Pokemon remakes in less time Legends Arceus took to exist meant the project was always doomed from the start

LGPE is conceptually neat but it's stuck with the eternal baggage of how Masuda handles Kanto in general. If it were made by another Game Freak mainstay it wouldn't have been as restrictive as it was. I doubt even the GO mechanics would be anywhere near as intrusive

While I'm sure some minority of consumers buy both versions (they sell the double packs for a reason) reading between the lines here it sounds more like the idea behind having 2 versions was not only to increase sales but to also better establish Legends as main series titles. It sounds like they're worried that due to the change in gameplay that consumers consider Legends a spin-off series despite Game Freak themselves considering the titles mainline entries. Maybe that's why they instead positioned ZA as both a follow-up to XY and to fill the void of the Z version consumers never got. (Maybe the idea was that by having the game be more closely tied directly to a traditional title that it would fulfill the same goal of establishing Legends as mainline games with fans?)

Either way, bullet dodged. Even if Gamefreak were good at their jobs, 4 player co-op in an real time combat open world sandbox sounds a bit too ambitious to run well on the Switch 1. If they ever return to the concept or something similar, probably better to have saved it for the stronger Switch 2 hardware instead.

Terapagos could've been tied into Kalos. The crystals are a common motif for Mega, the weapon was crystal, Diance and Carbink have this unexplored lore about crystals.

Instead, we just went deeper down the hole, where the major set piece is a crystal tree that's never addressed by the text. Placing that story in Kalos would've given it more context. That might explain why Kieran looks so much like the Rust leader.

Yeah, that's exactly why I think 2 versions were being considered. When the consumer goes to the store and see a pokemon game with 2 version titles, they're trained to recognize those games as mainline pokemon games. Only other way to really break that narrative would be to establish a consistent trend among repeated titles of the franchise evolving, which I do think is something being built towards between experimenting with new forms of gameplay in ZA (which is a mainline game) and creating Champions as the retirement home for the nerds that still love the classic turn based combat.

I'm glad Game Freak realised they can't just go back and turn that specific stone over. Making the revival/birth of Entei/Raikou/Suicune something you can witness for yourself rather than simply a legend of the past could only end badly after 25+ years of sitting on it.

It would be tacky to retread the same idea right after PLA, but Celebi works better a better plot device than Arceus ever did. Having the player go back in time, but remain in the same physical space, feels weirdly unbalanced in terms of the Dialga/Palkia lore. DP and PLA pay lip service to both legendaries an their tribes being equals, but the narrative says otherwise. It would've made more sense if the player was time displaced and on the other side of the world. Instead, it makes Dialga seem like the favourite son.

We already had a side quest with Celebi in HGSS, and its role in the fourth movie was a really neat glimpse into the past. Feels like they took the Legends Johto idea, and grafted it onto Gen 4, because they already planned out merch and TCG with Sinnoh Pokemon.
