A health bar is just that, in SV you could battle a Pokemon reduce its HP, escape then rebattle it with the same HP as before but you'd get no indication that its HP had been lowered by targetting that Pokemon.

This is spot on, yeah. Your rival is a friendly guy who lives in the region and sort of tours you around, you're on vacation there with your mother after she won tickets in a lottery. Family trauma comes from the main villain's son, who is being spoiled by him and groomed to be his heir after his elder brother died (though apparently they don't want to explicitly put this information in the game?) and eventually has to turn against his dad. Don't know about the box legendaries, there's honestly not much info on them in this other than that they're optional and help you out in the final battle if you catch them. You do get a legendary pokemon early on though, which is the one with random variations. Theme of the game is about climate change and passing on the world to the next generation.
