Game Freak is the weak link here, not Nintendo. Not saying Nintendo doesn't have problems and isn't partially at fault for the way the series has been handled, but it seems pretty clear at this point that Game Freak just lacks the manpower, passion, and vision to do right by the franchise. If it's ever gonna be more than what it is now it either needs to change hands or Game Freak needs to be completely restructured from top to bottom.

Neither option is good.
Option #1 is pointless because Game Freak would still suck at making games. All going multiplat would do is inflate the sales even higher and make it that much more unlikely for the series to ever improve.
Nintendo themselves aren't good at developing RPGs, so they'd either turn Pokemon into full-blown Ubishit like they did to Zelda, or they'd farm it out to Monolith or IS who are barely better than Game Freak.

It's the truth. Notice how pretty much any Nintendo RPG series you can think of was farmed out to a different studio. Paper Mario and Fire Emblem are IS, Xeno is Monolith, Mother was HAL, Mario & Luigi was AlphaDream, Golden Sun was Camelot, Fossil Fighters was Artdink and Spike Chunsoft, Custom Robo was Noise. Nintendo themselves is still ruled by out-of-touch boomers like Miyamoto who hate RPGs.
