They're just the night battles in the story but with multiple battle zones to fly to. When you get a challenger ticket you can talk to a clerk at the quasartico building or whatever the fuck they're called and you can fight some of the characters from the story again (and the rank Z guy)

Awful grind, I tried to do at least 2 battles per night by nearly finishing a 20k point card and saving it for the second ticket.
If you can't be assed to do the grind, the story is Jett is the rival's grandma, they were searching for any relative who knew their parent, Jett retires as CEO for not revealing the truth of Ange to the public and makes your rival the new CEO, your rival gives up Floette to you since they won't have as much time to battle

There's a 'plus move' system that you can use the mega gauge for besides mega evolving that powers up moves, moves can become able to be boosted as pokemon level up or (and the only way if the way you taught a pokemon the move was through tm) using an item called a seed of mastery and handing it to an NPC at a dojo. Note that mega pokemon have all their moves become plus for the duration of the mega.
Any pokemon can still use the plus move system, and there are normal held items like life orbs or leftovers and the like. They're just fine.

I haven't tried shiny hunting in this game yet so I can't say. But from what I have played, it seems a little annoying to reset an area to get new spawns

Unless there's a method that turns the rate into 1/10 it's probably going to be shit given how small the wild zones are and how much of a pain it is just to find some of the rarer spawns because nothing despawns until you kill it, fly back or sit on a bench.

People remember to use the Move + system properly. What Megaevolution does is make all the moves currently equipped + Tier even if they haven't been unlocked yet, you still need to press + while locking into the target pokemon to activate the attack it will consume a chunk of the HP but is the actual proper way to deal boosted damage, Megapokemon or not. Don't think you get the boost by evolving, all you get is the extra stats.

As soon as you get the mission to do sidequests, there's a few areas to get buneary and when you unlock area 6 you can cycle the spawns by using a pokecenter, teleporting back to area 6 and checking the three spawns, then doing it again until an alpha spawns of the gender you want. They know the move dig, which is sometimes useful and can't be relearned as an alpha.
