It's a difficult line to walk, on one hand you want to do something more interesting than baddy bads, but on the other hand, media as of late has just been inundated with morally grey 'complex' villains that it's become derivative.
I'd almost argue it's a consequence of the current landscape of media as a whole, but who knows I'm just some retard

Morally grey bad guys donโ€™t exist in real life though. Purely fictional.

I mean, it's pretty rare for people to actually think they're doing something wrong, people invent justifications for what they do.
I think that's maybe the issue, rather than writing a character who does bad shit and deludes themselves, people write characters who are narratively heroic in their own story but who work against the protagonists.
I'm kind of yammering, I agree with you, it's just something I've had on my mind regarding TV and movies the last couple of years so I have thoughts.

It is kind of nuts that an outright evil character is a rare thing in media now.

this was an issue way before Dragonball Super. I suspect Frozen is the start point personally that characters can't just be obviously evil. It always have to be some twist
