I remember thinking Eiscue and Calyrex were the worst designs I had ever seen from this franchise when they first leaked, I mean absolutely DIRE designs. But even those two look like quaint compared to Mega Starmie, Mega Skarmory and Mega Feraligatr. I find it incredible that no matter how many times I believe Lamefreak has finally hit rock-bottom, they go even further beyond. Can't wait to see how dreadful the randomly-generated Gen X mon will be.

If the rest of it had a slightly different look from the base form. Hell, even just a different color or pattern, I think it'd do a lot. It wouldn't make it look less goofy, which was obviously the point, but it'd make it look more like an actual change. Instead of the problem it has now, which is it's way, way too indistinguishable from normal Starmie, except for the legs. Starmie is actually a really solid pokemon, it has gen 1 nidoking tier coverage, it's just typically hidden in a lot of games, so people miss it on playthroughs if they're not looking

I'm a 30-year starmiefag veteran and this is my first time seeing this. I could not be more disappointed. What the hell were they thinking? Why not do something like, make the gem bigger and more powerful looking, and maybe add a third larger start behind it so it looks even more abstract and eldritch when it spins?

Personally I always liked how flexible it was in the first Pokemon stadium (this gif >>58445073 ) and thought going part Steel and having the starfish in the back be consistently spinning to resemble a buzzsaw would be a cool design. Emphasis on cool because I don't dislike goofy megas but I think you should save the goofy designs for the goofy mons like Slowbro.

Infinitely better than what we got. Design is simple and yet affective, it does the theme of Starmie being an alien creature with a vaguely human posture thing way better than the lazy sack of shit of a Mega we got.
The red tips on the legs are meant to resemble the actual eyes starfish have at the tip of their tentacles. The gem has an eye now ominously staring at you and it has a cool shooting start motif with the back section of Starmie. I think >>58446041 this was one is better in general but I posted a different variant for the sake of variety.
Also fun fact I learned a while back about starfish while reading research papers, starfish despite seeming like such relatively simple creatures can actually make friends with other starfish and have complex relations with other sea creatures.

Even when keeping to the same design idea (goofily stretching its proportions into a more human like one), it's just so bland visually. They literally just stretched it. Adding some warping to the other "limbs," changing the color, changing the texturing, even adding some sort of otherwise pointless patterning to break it up would've done a lot to make it more palatable, all without "ruining" the basic idea of making it look like a goofy starfish waddling around on land.
