If gamefreak makes gen 10 and the mainline entry is objectively the worst pokemon game ever from a objective perspective but exceeds sales then it will forever cement their complacency with those successes while the most avid defenders will always flaunt the "You don't matter" cards
BUT and this is important, they don't make the money back and the game flops then every excuse will effectively have dried up and the IP is now a free target for anyone to voice their grievances without someone passive-aggressively shutting them down with the sales numbers.
Think of BDSP's reception. Horrible remakes and the average response is just "Alright I heard you now let's move on to something else". Imagine that but on a bigger scale because of the 10th gen and anniversary stigma. The only way everyone involved with making Pokemon could recover from is only making adjustments that are a net plus for THE PLAYERS.
If there is a moment to make an actual difference then it would be next gen and it is to actually put your wallet away, rent the game if you can resist it because your money from the rental won't go to Nintendo or Gamefreak, and actively discourage buyers from getting it in person. We all saw the pictures, getting them from obtaining it is another blow to the devs.
Make a difference in the next generation, and make it stick.
