Paldea is confirmed to be just over the mountains from Kalos.

So probably safe to assume Galar, Kalos, and Paldea are probably closely connected mirroring real life. Hence the abundance of references

Welcome to the Ian Flynn style of pokemon games being written from now on where shitty ass references are an excuse for dialogue you bought it anyway eventually someone will say "To catch them all is my real test" and "I want to be the very best" you will clap and buy it anyway like trained sealios and seels

There's a lot of references to past regions in thisg ame, through oddly enough, despite so many kanto pokemon I haven't seen any NPC's talk about that place like they do the others, obviously I've seen paldea, Galar and Alola talked about alot, a hiker looking guy was talking about a green looking spot giving him the hibi jeebies in Alola and he's glad to be back in Kalos

In fact, isn't there a running theory that Harmony, Paxton are from Alola given the Zygarde cell was found on their luggage the day they arrived in Kalos? I mean it adds up with Emma's story about having first gotten reports of 10 percent Zygarde when MC arrivese and how she knows iwhat that form is from her implied resources being Sina and Dexo who as we know were stationed in Alola during Zygarde's time there AND how Syncamore seemingly resigned from the research lab following Lysandre's defeat something he talked about doing with Diantha way back in the original game

I think the heavy Galar and Paldea mentions are probably both because they're both recent games (and Legends Galar being a thing too) but also the fact that presumably they're close together in the Pokemon world just like the real world. There's a surprising lack of Kanto references though. I've seen 0 mentions of Hoenn. A few of Sinnoh, a few of Alola, one of Unova and one of Johto.

Do they expect people to care about these references? To be excited to revisit a region that was only introduced 5 years ago?

Seems to me like Kalos is really reaching the limit of what people have any nostalgia for, and that's much more because of Mega Evolution than anything in the region itself. Johto, Hoenn, and Unova seem like the obvious picks if that's something they want to tap into.

I like how they actually explained why Zygarde was in Alola.

The issue is you're assuming it's for nostalgia. They do the revisits now since it fits into their workflow better, plus it lets them train new employees and experiment with new gameplays tyles and features. Hence why Legends Galar is going to be Pikmin inspired

Near Restaurant Le Wow in Rouge Plaza someone mentions wanting a Strange Souvenir from the Alola region. Kinda both an XY and SM ref since the Strange Souvenir was an Alola hint in the original XY from a "faraway region"
