As the other Anon said, they tied L: Z-A to Switch 2 HEAVILY. Like, to the point as soon as they revealed Switch 2 and L: Z-A's version for it, they stopped marketing the game with Switch 1 footage. It's clearly obvious the game was to push the system, doubly so with its actual release window and reveal of fuck all interesting or noteworthy normalfag offerings (no 3D mario, no proper Zelda, Splatoon spin-off) BUT Pokémon Switch 2 edition. There's also the fact they're releasing for Switch 2 next year and are Nintendo's best bet to drive adoption from older fans in launch year, than having to wait till next (they'd rather you bought the big boy console, rather than the cheapo kiddy one, after all). And then there's the fact pokémon releases drive console sales regardless (BDSP's Jap launch saw a 50% rise in the weekly console sale total), so having it releasing simultaneously means double the opportunity to sell some 3-figure games unit alongside.

I've never seen a kid play Pokemon in public after the GBA era. During the DS era, it was all PSPs. From the 3DS era onward it was smartphones and tablets. I've yet to see a kid rocking a Switch in public.

I've seen a couple kids with Switches in public over the years, but nowhere near as many as the Game Boy or DS lines.
I think what's changed is that Nintendo has become a lifestyle brand for "Nintendo adults" in the same way that Disney did for "Disney adults." IIRC, they put out demographic data a few years ago showing that the majority of Switch owners were in their 20s and 30s. And they're certainly not charging kid-friendly prices for the Switch 2 and its games. I assume it's ultimately a consequence of the global birth rate crisis that brands for children now need to appeal to manchildren to stay afloat.

As a teacher I can tell you that while my elementary school students are more into the cards than the games, many of the kids I've taught play the games. I actually just had a chance to look over one of my kids collections since he brought his beat up Switch to play on the bus and other kids in my class talked about playing SV.
