You need to understand that Pokemania was insane. Like really insane. Everything was about Pokémon. Toy stores was mostly Pokémon. Every child was obsessed with Pokémon. Schools had to ban Pokémon cards because kids would get into fistfights over them.
Parents wanted an explanation for why children were so obsessed with Pokémon, so the whole "It's a satanic ploy" was easy to believe if you were a Christian simpleton. And additionally to that, there was indeed the evolution aspect of it, which hardcore Christians found blasphemous.
