The original thread (
>>11735928) has reached the bump limit it seems. Rules of the thread are simple:
>You can only talk about games and systems made before the US release of the NES (1985). Everything before it from the CRT Amusement Device to stuff like Marble Madness is cool here. Later and homebrew ports for Pre-NES games are allowed (e.g. Jr. Pac-Man was released in arcades in 1983 but the 2600 port came out in 1986).>That's it.Thoughts on Radar Scope? Personally, I think it's just okay. I'd rather play Galaxian over it.
>>11763390 (OP)Honestly a lot of early Nintendo games are just okay. Helifire is definitely better than Radar Scope, but there are better submarine games from the time.
>>11763390 (OP)Donkey Kong and congo bongo are some of my favorites from that era.
Guess that's true. That's probably a better assessment than Nintendo itself gives Radar Scope when they aren't pretending it never happened.
I'm kinda surprised Super Bug never got a port. I can imagine the titular Bug would become a Square, but it's not like that stopped other ports.

Yeah, one defined the golden age of arcades and the other is just a clone with a bit of unbalanced gameplay and less memorable characters. Not a bad one, though.

I wonder what went wrong with the sequels, considering they became less notorious than the predecessor.
>>11764331According to Wikipedia there was an Atari 8-bit port planned but it never got released. A 2600 port would've definitely worked if they used the paddles (or the Indy 500 paddle).
I'm currently high right now (dude weed) and I need some 2600 game suggestions.

Dig Dug or Centipede or Joust or Q*bert or Video Pinball if you're in the right mood for a weird but potentially fun knockoff of something greater (I know I liked all of them as a kid)
Warlords or Kaboom! if you're set up for paddle control or emulation thereof
>>11766332I would also suggest Bump n' Jump (it's a good conversion on Atari 2600), but the music, imho, might be a little bit depressing.
Interestingly, Atari 8-bit computers and Atari 5200 seem to have completely different versions of Centipede. The computer version looks nearly identical to the later Commodore 64 port. It makes sense that the 5200 version would need reworking as the console supports analog controls, similar to the original arcade version.
>>11766119Berzerk is a must. You zap robots who shoot at you. Suprisingly excellent port of the arcade original.

Feeling a bit frisky, what are some good C64 games which were released on tape IN AMERICA worth adding to NTSC rom collection?
Why didn't companies continue this type of furniture/household appliance design philosophy that Pre-NES systems had? It looks classy and feels more family oriented but not in a childish way.
>>11768035To me it always looked like it would be part of a car dashboard. Aesthetics for appliances just moved away from that, the NES had more of a VCR look

It still blows my mind that there existed an online service that allowed people to play Atari games. What blows my mind even more is that there's actually footage of someone using the service.

Super low baud rate - but 2600 era games are also so teeny tiny, so it worked out.

>>11768075The VCRs from the 2600 era also had wood panels.
This game is a prime example of how reading the manual for an Atari game can completely change how you enjoy it. It's a great runner game and the recreation of the beginning of Don't Stop Believin isn't terrible.

>>11772718Never played this before. I really like the idea of each life is a part of the ship. The enemy pattern is also wild too. I can see myself getting autisically obsessed with it.
>>11771858What there was a 2600 one too?! I just watched it on YouTube and yeah it does look pretty cool. I don't care to try it myself since I had my fill of Journey games in a previous thread. (The arcade Journey is surprisingly fun, is what I found then. Also, you have to make sure you get both the game file and the samples file for it if you play in MAME.)

What do you guys do when it comes to emulating paddle games? I've heard of an adapter that allows 2600 paddles to work on PC, but I see conflicting things on whether or not it's something you can buy or something you have to build yourself. I wish nu-atari would make USB paddles since they're so invested in retro gaming, but I doubt they ever will.

Food Fight (Atari 7800, 1984) gets frantic as heck after stage 20. Perfect game for when you are in a zen state.
>updated MEME after half a year, new pre-NES stuff!
>just Poker & clones and an unreleased Tangram puzzle arcade game by SNK
It's never worth it. Anyway here's Void for the Sharp MZ-700. A pretty neat 3D perspective shooter that uses the pseudo-pixel characters for larger graphics. It has you fight some arcade classic and they do kinda behave as they should. The Asteroids stages feels a bit empty though.
Coleco chads, where we at today? I put in some time with Tapper today.
>>11776293Playing Gorf. A pretty good version, even if it is missing the Galaxians stage.
>>11776293Atari Aficionado here, not too familiar with Coleco but I think I'll give the definitive contemporary (US home console) port of Donkey Kong a whirl today. That and more Pepper II. Pepper II is awesome.
>>11776281>>just Poker & clones and an unreleased Tangram puzzle arcade game by SNK>you will never see Big Fight: Big Trouble in the Atlantic Ocean emulated correctly>you will never experience proper emulation of most modern 3D games>no Primal Rage with correct emulated protection>no Discrete Circuit games emulated, so no Death RaceLife is meaningless.
>>11776351Coleco is better than Atari, and much better since you can play 2600 games on your Coleco with an expansion module.
Shame about the Coleco controller, however. Luckily you can just use a Super Action Controller on it.
Knocking out some 2001/Arcadia titles. The characters are disgustingly smoothly animated for the system with movement that feels like the programmer wanted to make a tech demo.
I don't quite know how I did it, but I ended up on the other side of the net. The AI's serves will always fall short to "deal" with my position so he double faults and for some reason my serves then take place on the same end, but still count properly for my score. Strange way of playing doubles.
>>11776602Is there something worth playing on the Emerson Arcadia 2001 or a good emulator for it?
>>11777462WinArcadia. It handles both Signetics CPU/VDC console families (1292 & 2001) as well as some computer designs with similar hardware.
As for the games, it has some rare ports. It's got the only licensed version of The End, Pleiades and Red Clash as well as the only console port of Jungler for example. Not interesting for most though as you can just emulate the original arcade versions.
I still have lots to play, but it's mostly the typical clones or basic ideas of games. Sometimes with concessions, Turtles has you collect all the turtles and then leave the screen instead of bringing every turtle to houses (it also just ends entirely after 8 levels). You are definitely playing a budget system and I'd say it compares decently to the Asian and lower quality American 2600 game releases at least.

>>11768035After the industry crash Nintendo wanted to clearly distinguish old from new tech and make their shit seem futuristic and cutting edge. Faux wood paneling screams "1973" which was not cool in 1983.
Also the NES design was clearly influenced by VCRs, which were the hot shit for a few years prior to the NES

Anyway I find that I like Coleco and Atari 5200 games better than most NES games and afterwards. They're older than I am, so there's no nostalgia here. I like pick up and play arcade games.
Can't say I lucked out for gen 3. Apple II's library is a disaster for a random picks with its vast horde of simple kiddy/eduware and the G7400 is a late system that suffers from cross compatibility with its predecessor.
Did get to play Dragon Buster though. Was fine initially until some enemies start juggling you helplessly or the jumping messes up. It's a cool step forward, but it's a bit of an awkward game to play at times.
>>11780102>Anyway I find that I like Coleco and Atari 5200 games better than most NES games and afterwards. They're older than I am, so there's no nostalgia here. I like pick up and play arcade games.I like NES and later games, but I get what you mean. The problem is that starting with the NES, a lot of games are made so the content is spread through hours of gameplay, so when you start playing one it's a huge commitment if you want to experience the game properly
Sometimes you just want to kill people with a flying ostrich for like 15 minutes and don't feel like you missed out on something because you broke the contract where you have to play the game for 3 hours
Also ran into The Undoukai. Field Day is the English title and as far as I know they only removed the Japanese flag. It's basically a Hyper Olympics-em-up with a (obviously Japanese) sports day theme and a bit more personality.
It's still just button-mashing outside of the 1 timing event, but it's not like this type of game evolved much past that until way later.
I played arcade Jr. Pac-Man for the first time a few days ago. Slightly harder than the Atari 2600 version (although I'm not got at Jr. Pac regardless of the port) but they both play similar enough. The scrolling stage is cool but I'd prefer Ms. Pac-Man over it any day, although it's certainly not bad.

I still prefer Red Baron to Battlezone, altough the latter was more successful.
Anyway, speaking about WWI and biplanes, are there some interesting games (both arcade and home consoles/computers) featuring biplanes or/and WWI settings?
>>11786664Red Baron is fucking awesome. Though for some reason when I emulate it the flying is sorta fucked up. Not unplayable but you have to fight the stick to fly right. Is this in the original or an emulation quirk?
>>11778886Whacking a chun right into his gaping boomer maw would be a better surpise than being forced to play that slop again!
>>11787740You need to calibrate the rotation in test mode (F2). Then when done, while playing, run clockwise/counterclockwise a bit and it should adjust by itself (works better if you have analog joystick).
Also, speaking about biplanes, Sky Kid / Sky Kid Deluxe is a nice game.
