Catrap, along with Kwirk and its sequel A-maze-ing Tater, are fun puzzlers. One specific thing I like about them is there's no automatic action or urgency, the game only moves when you press buttons, like an RPG. I think that's a great property for a handheld game to have, especially when playing on a phone with crappy touchscreen controls.

Batman the Video Game for gameboy. At first it looks like a cheap cash grab licensed game, but upon playing it one discovers that it is really an actual game. And it's hard.

It's good to see more fans of this masterpiece here. Indeed, at first it looks like Super Mario Land with a short and chubby Batman that kills enemies with a gun... but it's so fun to play and all of those aspect are actually pretty charming I think, I couldn't stop playing this one until I finally beat it, that autoscroller before the Joker boss was a pain, just like Joker itself.

It still felt great to pull it off though.

"Comparative" is pretty relative in this case, ironically. You don't get mountains of licensed garbage released for a system that was a flop, regardless that it may have done worse than its predecessor.

Dig Dug as a whole is not underrated, but its Game Boy port is. The New Dig Dug mode is fun, but really hard.
40 rounds with a boss after each 10 rounds. Think I got like 30+ game overs. It really starts to get tricky after round 20.
If you want more arcady fun, there’s the Bomberman GB series (GB 2 is probably the best one, but GB 3 is pretty good too), and Donkey Kong ‘94.
Mr. Driller’s Game Boy Color port is fun too. Yeah it’s the most primitive way to play it, but it’s pretty impressive for the handheld. All those blocks connecting to each other. Make sure to play the Japanese version, as the American/PAL version don’t save your score. Although, if that does not matter to you, go ahead and play it in English.

It's a Galaxy Tab A8, not too powerful, but emulation up until PS1 works well mostly, also got it used for dirt cheap. I use it with an Ipega PG9083s controller, the directional pad has a lot of false diagonals and isn't very good, but it's one of the few controllers made to fit tablets out of the box, and it was also dirt cheap to get. It's a cozy setup in general.

Because it's easier to make something move in a straight line than it would be to program a parabolic flight path for batarangs.
Plus, bullets were a universally understood symbol in video games and wouldn't cause confusion for players unfamiliar with the source material, which would impact reception.

Tower of Druaga port is really great. Minor quality of life improvements and a password system make it actually beatable. Just don’t forget to grab the quick shoes on floor two.
1942 for gbc has very tight controls and a hard difficulty setting. Passoword system as well. Not as challenging as the arcade version on max difficulty but very satisfying to pick up and play a few levels.
Paperboy, on gbc not gameboy they’re two different ports, is totall excellent. It might be the only really great version of the game. Arcade version is a little clunky and NES one doesn’t quite work either. Of these three I’d say its the real hidden gem because it takes an okay game with a cool idea and tightens it up into something really fun.

>>11799531
Killer Instinct has responsive gameplay and decent sized character sprites. There is a king of fighters or fatal fury game that is good too. Street Fighter 2 has responsibe controls but the framerate is bad, probably because the sprites are huge. Mortal Kombat is ok but the block button is start which just doesn’t work.

I don't know how I ended up getting this game, but I loved it and it definitely belongs in a list of underrated, or at least overlooked games.
It's a pretty unique RPG with some "different" humor. I remember it being a big grindy, but the battles are short, and the single-button turns in battle make them go by even quicker. The fighting mechanic is enough to make it worth at least playing for a bit.

Anyone here have experience with gameboy screen modding? I recently fixed up an old gameboy and was thinking of maybe adding a backlight.
Most mod kits also include the bivert chip, but judging from photos I think the bivert colors look like ass and nothing like the original gameboy. Apparently you can also just install the backlight screen and tune down the brightness with a resistor. Anyone have tried that?
