A shame that everyone was too busy chasing the 3D trend so a lot of these titles were overlooked. This was a time when 2D Platformers could be taken to the next level instead of being held back by technical limitations, not to mention they were finally freeing themselves from the clutches of the pixel art style.
Use this thread to appreciate and highlight 2D Platformers of the fifth generation of consoles.
>>11789221 (OP)but SOTN exists and it's regarded as the best 5th gen game
I hate the 2D platformers where they thought that having a ton of random colors and obnoxious backgrounds while controlling an ugly main character was a good idea.
the ps1 umihara game is my favorite
Nights into dreams is a 2d platformer but that's not something /vr/ and the rest of the world are ready to hear
>>11789301A platerformer with no jump or plateforme...
>>11789284Sadly back then it was mocked for being archaic 2D while the N64 one was cutting edge 3D. Aged about as well as that Alien: Resurrection review.
>>11789632It recieve great reviews stop spreading myths
>>11789589It sold 1.27 million units, twice as many as Super Castlevania IV on the SNES.
>>11789284Regarded by who? Journos and retards?
>>11789589Great contribution to a thread about overlooked games.
>>11789650I was there and I mocked it. "B-b-but this review I found!" is desperate straw clutching.
Does Tomba count as 2D? How about Bug! ?
For me, it's Little Ralph
>>11789284He said platformer, not a jarpig.
Clockwork Knight 1 and 2 were my childhood
>>11789221 (OP)MMX4, Heart of Darkness, Yoshiโs Story, MK Mythologies, Paper Mario, Rampage World Tour, Kirby 64, Iโm sure thereโs more
Guys, how the fuck do I get 4chan-X or an equivalent back? Is 4chan-X really not to be trusted? I can't just select every image one by one
>>11789284>but SOTN exists and it's regarded as the best 5th gen gameonly after 2007 when youtubers were born.
5th gen was definitely lacking in 2D platformers.
The most famous one, SOTN, is not really a pure platformer and is more aligned with RPGs. You can not die from falling to pits in SOTN.
There's of course a bunch of games like Goemon's Great Adventure, Klonoa, Tomba, Astal, Clockwork Knight and also some more obscure ones like Fuun Gokuu Ninden. But with the exception of some of those, like Goemon which is really excellent, the rest aren't comparable to the best stuff 3rd and 4th gen had to offer in the genre.
Yes, it's infuriating because, just as the technology was most optimal for amazing 2D, the money was on 3D, making 2D games be more budget projects.
Rondo of Blood. Yes it counts as 5th gen fuck you
>>11790261I've only beaten the first Strider, but holy shit some of these perspectives are so stupid looking. At the same time I've never seen a 2d game try to pull off these kind of shots before so it turns out to look soulful.

>>11789589I've never seen it on platinum, I think 95-96 was the absolute low point for the general public's respect for old franchises. Looks like an old Snes game was used as a big insult for a lot of game reviews back then.
Abe's Obysee looks so good on a crt, the colours really pop.
>>11789238This game fucking rocks. It's just one of those games you can pick up and beat in under an hour. Great gameplay and aesthetic.
For me, its Goemon's Great Adventure (N64), Skullmonkeys (PSX) and Super Tempo (Sat)
>>11792034>Super TempoShocked I never heard of this until now. Looks phenomenal holy shit
>>11792098It's a sequel to the first one on 32X
>>11792034Good list.
For me it's probably GGA, X4 and Mischief Makers
>>11792104Oh also Psychic Killer Taromaru on Saturn is pretty great. Sort of plays like Alicia Dragoon but better, and has co-op.
Also Shinobi X is actually pretty cool despite the mortal kombat aesthetic that turns people off
>>11792149Across all markets, US Japan and Europe. It was the best selling Castlevania game narrowly beating out the original.
>>11789672It sold barely 700k on US, Europe and Japan including reprints.
>>11792098The 32X version imo is a better platformer, but both are worth trying. I would compare Super to the jap equivalent of Earthworm Jim 2. It doesnt stick to a pure platforming formula and later parts of the game felt like the devs just throwing out random ideas. Game Gear version was kinda shit imo.
>>11792186>It sold barely 700k on US, Europe and Japan including reprints. You're using Wikipedia, that number covers only 2 countries, the sources are only for sales in Japan and the United States, European sales are not mentioned at all.
VGChartz numbers list Europe's at 400 thousand and the North America's number is 100 thousand higher since it covers the cotenant and not just the US, Japan's stays the same. Whether VGChartz is correct or not, the number is certainly higher than 703 thousand on Wikipedia as that number misses Europe, and other North American countries.
>>11792098>>11792034Never heard of it either but I've added it to my to play list
>>11792106Not really a platformer either (but Strider 2 wasn't either) but it's okay, fun games
Too much consoleshit, here some actual ludo

>>11790257Gorgeous visuals bad gameplay seems like the underlying theme of the 2d platformers in this gen
>>11789295That one is great. Excellent physics too.
Why do I struggle to enjoy most of these when I love so many from the 4th gen?
Didn't grow up with either btw
Thank you to this thread for introducing me to quite a few games
