A shame that everyone was too busy chasing the 3D trend so a lot of these titles were overlooked. This was a time when 2D Platformers could be taken to the next level instead of being held back by technical limitations, not to mention they were finally freeing themselves from the clutches of the pixel art style.

Use this thread to appreciate and highlight 2D Platformers of the fifth generation of consoles.

I hate the 2D platformers where they thought that having a ton of random colors and obnoxious backgrounds while controlling an ugly main character was a good idea.

Sadly back then it was mocked for being archaic 2D while the N64 one was cutting edge 3D. Aged about as well as that Alien: Resurrection review.

5th gen was definitely lacking in 2D platformers.
The most famous one, SOTN, is not really a pure platformer and is more aligned with RPGs. You can not die from falling to pits in SOTN.
There's of course a bunch of games like Goemon's Great Adventure, Klonoa, Tomba, Astal, Clockwork Knight and also some more obscure ones like Fuun Gokuu Ninden. But with the exception of some of those, like Goemon which is really excellent, the rest aren't comparable to the best stuff 3rd and 4th gen had to offer in the genre.
Yes, it's infuriating because, just as the technology was most optimal for amazing 2D, the money was on 3D, making 2D games be more budget projects.

I've only beaten the first Strider, but holy shit some of these perspectives are so stupid looking. At the same time I've never seen a 2d game try to pull off these kind of shots before so it turns out to look soulful.

I've never seen it on platinum, I think 95-96 was the absolute low point for the general public's respect for old franchises. Looks like an old Snes game was used as a big insult for a lot of game reviews back then.

Abe's Obysee looks so good on a crt, the colours really pop.

Also Shinobi X is actually pretty cool despite the mortal kombat aesthetic that turns people off

The 32X version imo is a better platformer, but both are worth trying. I would compare Super to the jap equivalent of Earthworm Jim 2. It doesnt stick to a pure platforming formula and later parts of the game felt like the devs just throwing out random ideas. Game Gear version was kinda shit imo.

You're using Wikipedia, that number covers only 2 countries, the sources are only for sales in Japan and the United States, European sales are not mentioned at all.
VGChartz numbers list Europe's at 400 thousand and the North America's number is 100 thousand higher since it covers the cotenant and not just the US, Japan's stays the same. Whether VGChartz is correct or not, the number is certainly higher than 703 thousand on Wikipedia as that number misses Europe, and other North American countries.
