The era of late 90/very early 00s pokemon tournaments was wild.
They were supposedly "official" events, well the ones in stores like Toys R Us surely were, but some tournaments were very underground and yet still they had official presence from nintendo (or whoever was distributing nintendo officially in that country) and had an official Mew cart from Nintendo to transfer the mews to the kids who won.
It was really tough and the ambient very competitive. Lots of older kids/young adults who would obilerate little kids with teams of the most possible OP pokemon and meta moves. Little Jimmy with level 100 Pikachu from yellow ver had to chance.

In the almost 30 years since this game's release, have we gotten any insight into why there are bespoke truck graphics just outside the player's field of vision in a singular random spot of the map, or is that just going to remain a mystery forever?

I hated this part because no one ever told me it has to be exactly 150. If you do 151 it restarts the counter and if you walk away it resets the counter. Ended up using a fucking abacus to make sure I got exactly 150, and better make sure your batteries are good because if you save and reset you lose them. They fixed that part in yellow but you can't get mew from the truck any way so it doesn't matter.

It wasn't that rare, and even if you yourself didn't have internet at home, there's a good chance one of your friends did, and if not them, some random dipshit at school. All it would take is one kid at school reading about the Mew truck trick, or hearing about the trick from one of his friends at another school, and before you know it, a lot of the Pokemon playing population of the school would know about. I don't recall when I heard about the truck, but I do recall a friend at school informing me about MissingNo.

Has any other gen spawned more school yard talk about myths then this game? Has any other game even done this? The amount of urban legends surrounding this game is insane. People who did not grow up with these games have no fucking idea. Only thing I could imagine may eclipse it is Minecraft since kids were definitely very into that game. I didn't grow up with it though so I wouldn't know.

Nah. It came out at the perfect time when enough kids had internet access for rumors to become widespread, but not enough for everyone else to fact check them or oversaturate submissions.
Gen 2 in 1999/2000 was late enough for that balance to shift. And while you'd still get some rumors, it was never going to be on the same level.
