I actually find this control setup quite comfortable out of any vertical handhelds and the size to be just right; having the center button as the main hotkey trigger is super convenient, and you can even save the second analog stick for things like hotkeys and such. The problem is, again, retarded Anbernig releasing a better build quality version of the RG353V with a worse CPU somehow, and the mono speaker not being at the forefront for some ridiculous reason. Is it that fucking hard for someone to release an RG353V with better specs and build quality while still being compatible with Linux?

Slightly off topic, but is there a way to get a signal to one of these nowadays? I upgraded my last screen rectangle for a flip phone and it's been heavenly, but it'd be fun to slide the keyboard again. I was initially forced to "upgrade" back when 3G service was cut, so I imagine that's the impossible hurdle to functionally using this tech now.

Got a KTR1 used and I think this might be the ideal pocketable form for me. It's just about as big as it can be while still being able fit comfortably my pocket and since it's a basic slab shape it slides in much like a smartphone. The curve is enough to make it feel as ergonomic as possible short of getting a proper grip. 3:2 is perfect for GBA and comfortably close enough for many other systems.

The closest thing you're going to get to it, spec-wise, is the Retroid Pocket Classic. Which is $124. Except the Pocket Classic is a Gameboy Color inspired vertislop while the Slide is, well, a slider handheld like the PSP/Experia.
Surely you're not too much of a paint huffing retard to not understand why one costs $55 more.

Heads up if you want the 35xx pro, the G350 which I'm assuming has the exact same shell is built weird.
The board is only screwed in at the bottom half of the shell, so it kinda seesaws
I think because of this they used a slightly taller pivot on the dpad but the same membrane and pad shape of the other xx devices, resulting in an insanely sensitive mess. Fixable thankfully
I didn't have to cover anywhere near this much of the pads on my 35xx+

I hope it is, especially hope the sticks don't protrude like they do on the 406H. If we actually do get what amounts to a slighter bigger metal 40XX-H with the Slide screen and Gamecube emulation, then that's me done, I will never need another chinkheld ever again. Pretty much guaranteed to use analog triggers of course, but that's a sacrifice I'll be willing to make if it gets me literally everything else I could ever want.

I'd say it was my Galaxy Tab A8 tablet because it genuinely replaced my laptop for 90% of tasks, it's more compact and easier to take with me to places and especially on roadtrips, and every accessory gives it what it needs to excel at specific use cases, with my Bluetooth keyboard it's perfect for posting on imageboards, with a stylus it's how I draw and get in touch with my artist side, with a telescopic controller, in this case an Ipega PG9083s, it's a handheld that can make CRT shaders look so nice, and when I remove all of these things it's perfect for consuming content, especially reading books or comic books/manga. I love this thing.

I also got it for less than US$99 used and in good condition, a complete steal.

anyone else here having massive issues with Dolphin on Rocknix on the Retroid Pocket 5, can't get textures to render properly in most games*, at least not without having to use settings that make the games run like shit, anyone here have some recommended settings to potentially fix this?

*to give some examples, in a lot of games I'll be getting broken and/or flickery textures(Crash Nitro Kart for example is full of these) and some games just won't render some textures at all(Wario World is especially bad about this)

Knulli is a Batocera fork (Which itself is a fork of Emulation Station) so you get prettier UIs and way more tertiary things like native SSHing or RetroAchievements support baked in on the OS level in exchange for like 5 seconds more of boot time. It's also meant to be idiotproof so it somewhat prevents you from touching certain config files because it does OS-level overrides. They've made it much more user friendly with Gladiator and allow you to do basically any RA customization that would likely be necessary in the OS itself so it's mostly pointless to touch RA options inside of RA a this point.

Rocknix is just base Emulation Station without what Batocera focuses on. It gives you a bit more freedom than Knulli but isn't as up to date as far as I've seen.

MuOS and things copying it are the barebones, minimalist OSes. If you want something that does a cold boot in about five seconds and is just lists for the very basics needed to run your emulators this is is. It also lacks basic features the other ones have like Bluetooth which requires you to go to their Discord to grab (I think that was MuOS).

As far as I understand it GarlicOS and OnionOS are more or less upgraded versions of the stock OS looks of all these various cheaper handhelds. They take the look and simplicity of it and act as a middleground between minimalist and ES. They usually have more updated emulators and extra features the stock OSes don't have.

I personally do not care at all for minimalist UIs because I like the video previews, screenshots, the extra stuff like native SSHing, and the far better menuing which is why I've stuck to Knulli. Most of the people who want the minimalist stuff use their systems regularly outside of the home because stuff like >>11801623's "and takes forever to load" is literally a difference of a few seconds on a cold boot at best. It's beyond negligible. From a cold boot my RG34XX takes only 18 seconds on a 65 GB card.

RA requires an active connection to unlock them at all. It doesn't "buffer" the progress if you go offline while playing like Xbox does to prevent cheating them and it doesn't let you earn achievements offline only to unlock them when you go online like Steam or Sony do to prevent more cheating.
It's an always online system to prevent cheaters and people using completed saves to earn stuff. As it is they're only somewhat lenient with how you're allowed to use certain save files to bypass unlock requirements for higher difficulties so you don't have to do multiple playthroughs to unlock it in an "If you earn it it's fine, we'll assume you grabbed your real saves" way but discourage providing saves for other people to do the same.

Most android chinkhelds don't have the mobile chips and so if you turn off wifi and bluetooth, the sleep mode is outstanding. I don't even turn wifi off on mine(odin 2) and the sleep mode is a really good.

I'll also mention the odin 2 is running everything on GC upscaled with widescreen hacks, and everything on PS2 with widescreen hacks(although a handful of games need to be at native res because the emulator is an underdeveloped PoS)

I'm grid anon, not "round pixels" schizo anon. And thank you for posting that. The grid was always just an approximation for that grid like effect the real pixels have. I think the grid is a good way to get a similar look without a cpu-expensive shader. It looks more correct when it is on a handheld screen and not blown up on a monitor.

round-pixel-schizo is insane to think their odd shader looks remotely accurate or good

You were never meant to look at raw pixels for retro games. Shaders might not be perfect but they exist to recreate what you saw and only improve in accuracy over time.

Surprising the Dimensity 8300 seems very competitive in some PS2 games this guy showed off. It wiped the floor with the RP5 in Need for Speed Most Wanted on PS2, even in some GC games like Rogue Squadron 3. Iโ€™m not sure if itโ€™s because the 8300 can just brute force it and has a more efficient 4nm process over the 7nm used in the Snapdragon 865, or if the extra RAM in the RG557 also helps.

It seems to work better for some more demanding PS2 and GC games at resolutions above 2x. That seems more promising to me, especially since I wonโ€™t have to pay more for a proprietary screen protector and be upsold on a grip for comfort. By that point it just seems like Iโ€™ll be paying for roughly the same amount for a device when shipping comes into play, whether on AliExpress or otherwise.

I have been holding this back because the shitposting is fun, but I'm afraid you've grown delusional, 8:7fag.
Your best argument to the 8:7 claim being correct is comparing the SNES and DS ports of chrono trigger (conveniently ignoring the constant background art discrepancies in AR on the original but whatever)
However, the DS port runs at 256x192 compared to 256x224 of the snes version.
You purposefully misrepresent this in your frankly, shitty, collage of cope and lies.
Additionally, you do not account for the overscan cropping that is set to default on almost every single snes emulator, including all the retroarch cores. This also decreases either vertical or horizontal resolution, which is then scaled.
This is done so normoids can just fill the screen vertically by default.
This is in addition to your supposition that rectangles are never ever used in video games, and that all boxes must be square.
This is also incorrect.
The human field of vision is wider than it is tall, for obvious reasons. It is easier to move your head up and down maximally compared to left or right.
You fight against nature's visual perfection just as you fight against nature's numerical chromosome limit.
You are integer scaling, but doing so post crop.
Ergo, it is you who is the troon, 8:7fag.
Perchance.

Yes, thats the internal resolution.
I don't understand why this is so confusing to you people.
240p itself isn't a proper resolution, it's just taking advantage of a quirk, flaw in how a CRT displays a 480i image.
Snoy took advantage of this with the PS2, tendie took advantage of it horizontally and it worked so they carried it over to the snes from the famicom
Why is vertical stretching fin with you but not horizontal?
Going by 8:7 fags 'logic' games were meant to be played in a small square box on your TV because thats what the number says.

None of you must have actually had a CRT because CRTs had settings for scaling the image. You could choose to overscale so there was no unused space on the screen, or you could choose to underscale and have black unused space on your CRT. All of this is adjustable

You didn't have to scale the image at all, you could just have black bars on a CRT so your content would be displayed at 8:7

Probably no DS/3DS and PSP due to the awkward dual screen setup and widescreen aspect ratio. What's a good chink handheld that'll let me at least do the first ones? Probably something with enough juice to also run some shaders, good battery life, comfortable to hold. Won't break the bank.

Zhang just showed off the Unicorn A2-DS, and apparently it'll be powered by the Dimensity 8400. As cool as it looks I am a bit worried, since my A1 Unicorn had software issues where after a while it would fail to read L1/L2 until I did a full on device reboot. Will be interesting to see how this pans out, maybe we'll finally have a cheaper alternative for DS emulation on Android compared to the OneXSugar.

They fucked up. They shouldn't have enticed people to buy new colors of the 35 while the Flop was out if they had this in the furnace, they shouldn't have cloned the Flop as no one likes the sticks or the battery as a heatsink, they should have shopped for softer dome switches, spent more than 3 seconds designing the top half and used the new budget chip (where the fuck is it) as the extra gig of RAM doesn't do anything for 97% of people. Shame too, because the 34xx screen mogs the 35's pretty fucking bad in colors and brightness, didn't mind playing 4:3 on it at 3.1".

Doesn't data speed drop considerably when you set an SD card as internal memory extender?
Since internal storage (even on chinkhelds) tends to have higher transfer rates than SDs (except the very highest end ones, like the Extreme Pro).
Also, if you set the SD card as internal, you're stuck with it, since part of everything on your phone now resides on it.

The V1's got a V2 refresh but because so many stores still have the V1 stock you typically get the V1 which is why if you want to guarantee the fixes you need to get one of the newer transparent models, otherwise it's a gamble.

Since you don't have a transparent one the only way to tell is by popping the battery out and seeing if the fish paper is underneath it. It's a green piece of card stock basically. If you're willing to open it up then the way to tell is to look at the face buttons, start, select, the function button, the volume button, or the shoulder buttons. The buttons all have black foam on the buttons themselves.

If you have a v1 you need to apply the button fix via washers on both the d-pad and face buttons and optionally slap fish paper in there too.
If you have a v2 you need to apply the button fix via washers on just the d-pad according to the guy who was advocating to do it. Apparently the face buttons are fine in the v2 and don't pierce the domes since the new buttons are shaped differently.

outside of the Steam Deck and other full on Handheld PC's, if a retro handheld device is using Linux as it's OS, it isn't using a full desktop version of Linux, just a super stripped down version dedicated solely for handling what it needs to be an emulation device(and maybe have a music player app and/or a video player or an app for reading text/pdf files)

Adapters (from hdmi or vga to composite) do some weird things to the colors and make the picture look washed out like a bootleg vhs tape. A lot of people wouldn't notice that unless they have a side by side comparison, but it's not exactly esoteric. If you're going to use an adaptor, you might as well play on a modern monitor with some filters applied.
Or are you talking about some specific adapter that doesn't mess up the colors?

"Oh, honey, he's teasing you. Nobody has two television sets." is a famous quote from the 1980s movie, "Back to the Future" (you haven't heard of it? Wow). It's from the scene where Marty first wakes up in his mother's house in the past, comes downstairs for breakfast, and calls a television show that's airing for its first time live, "one of his favourite reruns". It leads into him talking about his television in his room, where his uncle starts freaking out about how rich he must be to have two tv's, which his grandmother ends the conversation with, "Oh, honey, he's teasing you. Nobody has two television sets." It's a great scene, very relevant to this conversation too.

It's typically an extremely bare version of Arch necessary just to run the emulators, some side stuff like maybe media players, and Emulation Station if it runs that. You can use something like WinSCP or in the case of the TrimUI Smart Pro on Crossmix/stock OS a terminal app to gain access to the terminal and treat it like you're on Arch.

You will have to jump through hoops to do anything with it though and it's going to be much more trouble than it's actually worth. That's why most people just deal with Portmaster.

I recently hacked my original switch 1, and installed retroarch on it. I loaded up Legend of Dragoon to try it out and the game seemed fine at first but the the screen froze while everything else continued playing. Do you have any ideas on what I could be doing wrong? I'm retarded so I don't know what I could be doing wrong because I don't even know what I could be doing right. Please hold my hand and guide me through this. I just want to play Legend of Dragoon at work.

What's the best handheld for emulating PC Engine? Ideally I'd like something with a 4:3 aspect ratio that can display 256x224 properly integer scaled. Not a big fan of Analogue but the high resolution screen seems to give a lot of wiggle room for cases like this.

GBA is 240x160, so the best way to integer scale onto a 1280x720 display is 4x to get 960x640 and lots of wasted space. Anything more would go over the screen's height. You can use the whole screen by using sharp bilinear to get the famous "balanced pixels." So yes, it was a big deal. He just made a dumb mistake of assuming that chink hardware reports as what it actually is inside Linux.
