About to play Gauntlet next week with some people. We have played before. Which version do you guys prefer, Legends or Dark Legacy? What about on which console, DC, ps2, xbox, arcade?
General Gauntlet discussion ITT. We decided we wanted to play something we have all played so this was the choice.
Maybe going for Dark Legacy on Xbox?
I'll give you the straight dope on every console version of this game, don't listen to anyone except me because I guarantee they aren't half as autistic as I am:
>Legends
>N64 is the original. Short load times, you have a permanent item inventory that visually displays what you have with icons (DL versions use text), and each player can scroll through their items and stats in-game without even pausing. Good map designs too, but the fewest levels. Has no FMVs, pretty low quality sound effects, but otherwise this is one of the best versions even including Dark Legacy.
>PS1 version is severely gimped: right off the bat, no four player (ouch). Fewer enemies on-screen, low quality graphics, slowdown. Best thing I can say is the item shop looks nice. Overall, the worst version of the game.
>Dreamcast version is a weird hybrid of arcade and Dark Legacy. Plays like Legends with some DL levels and characters added, but retains the arcade version's issue of not letting you buy health among other things -- also weird glitches/oversights like using the PS1 version's audio which tells you to look for secrets that don't exist in this version. No item inventory either. Kind of an interesting version and has a few unique features, but overall worse than N64.
>Dark Legacy
>PS2 version is the first DL release. Like all other Dark Legacy versions, offers a vastly expanded character/level roster, new features, better graphics etc. However, no permanent item inventory; anything you pick up is automatically activated ala the arcade/DC versions.
>Gamecube version released after DL PS2, has all the same extras (new levels, characters etc) but added some new items and features too. Has an item inventory, but it isn't visual like the N64 version and has several glitches with the item menu.
>Xbox version is the GCN version but with the best graphics, all of the new items/features, etc. Retains some of the item menu glitches but not all.
Overall, for Legends it's N64 and DL it's Xbox.
>>11803607 (OP)Dark legacy on Xbox. Gamecube version is fine too I guess, just avoid the PS2 version. It doesn't let you save items, so It kills the fun of hoarding all the power weapons from your friends.
PS1 version for the og.
>>11803653>>11803659I think I was headed towards DL on Xbox. Good to know it is probably the best bet.
Did the Arcade version get updated to what the Xbox has at any point? Was that at 60fps?
I have all the actual hardware and games. But if Arcade had some benefits we could emulate
>>11803661Main advantage arcade has over the console version is the lack of unnecessary features, like the level unlock system or the item storage.
>>11803692>the level unlock systemDouble edged sword because the arcade version gives you a choice of realms from the beginning but only two of them are gonna be possible to get through without leveling first, and even then you have to play all the levels in a linear order each time, you can't go back to specific levels.
>item storage>unnecessaryBeing able to pick up items and save them for later (and sell them for gold) adds a huge amount of depth to the gameplay, this is retarded. Not like it was even a late addition since the N64 version had this and it was literally the first release of Legends/DL after the original arcade version of Legends.
>>11803727Crazy they never updated the Arcade version after all the console variants.
>>11803738Why would they want you to have an item inventory or be able to go back to old levels and grind in the arcade version? This would let you 1cc, but these games literally cannot be 1cc'd in arcade because your health constantly drops, you can't buy health, you can't keep items, you can't sell items and there's barely enough food to beat the first realm without dying from health loss even without getting hit. The arcade version is a different product.
>>11803750Your reply seems confused. I said it was crazy they never updated it. Like you know... made the game better with all the better updates later versions got.
>>11803791> I said it was crazy they never updated it.I know what you said, your postulation was just retarded. The arcade versions are designed to munch quarters. The only thing they could have updated about the arcade version to bring it up to parity with the console versions would've been graphics, and even then, arcades were on their deathbed to begin with. Adding any of the new features like item inventory, selling items, buying health or going back to old levels, etc... All of those things make the game significantly easier to play and would defeat the purpose of the game being an arcade title. If what you wanted to say was, "they should have made a Dark Legacy 2 or another version of the game with the same amount of content that DL added over Legends", then you didn't say or imply that, and it would still be retarded because again, arcades were already dying by the time DL arcade released.
>>11803791The arcade version kinda sucks. Also none of the nude codes work and it runs worse than any console version.
If it were me, I would play Dark Legacy first because itโs the more fun game and that way youโre wasting less time. If they like it enough then he other one after
>>11804034(Then the other one after)
Typo
>>11803607 (OP)>About to play Gauntlet next weekSounds fun
>with some peopleNow if you tell me you're going to have pizza I'm going to be jealous.
Play my favorite Gauntlet too.
>>11803607 (OP)Why does no one talk about the original Gauntlet? I remember playing it on NES when I was a kid. I have just a vague memory of it, but I thought it was a good game.
>>11803607 (OP)>arcadeThis version is the only one that matters.
