I was in a strange situation where I had my NES up until 1998 when I got an N64 and skipped the SNES and Zelda 2 was my only zelda until OoT. I never beat it back then but I enjoyed the adventure.

I always thought Zelda 2 felt oddly easy for an NES game. That is, until you get to the valley of death. Then it turns into a fucking nightmare.

How come no other games(not even talking about the Zelda franchise but games in general) tried to replicate(and improve) its format?

There were a few copycats immediately after it released, like that Rambo game.

There were quite a few. Zelda 2 didn't invent the genre but it brought an age of action-adventure especially in 1987, Rambo, Castlevania 2, Battle of Olympus, Faxanadu, Cosmo Police Galivan, Cosmo Police Galivan, Gargoyle's Quest 1 and 2, Fire Bam, The Maze of Galious, that Wonder Boy game that's not Wonder Boy on Famicom, Rygar, I'd argue that all those games (and then some) owe something to Zelda 2, some more than others and I mostly just listed NES/FC game.
Anonymous No.11804519 [Report]
Helluva game. I haven't made it past the three eye rock palace yet, but what a trip it was to get there. This game has got to be zoomer-proof without the use of a manual.
Anonymous No.11804570 [Report]
it wasn't a huge Japanese hit but did majorly influence game design there

>Cosmo Police Galivan, Cosmo Police Galivan,
I think you accidentally double-listed Galivan and meant to put Chester Field in there somewhere. If nothing else Chester Field is notable for being mentioned in Nintendo Power as a game that was going to be translated and released in the US, but never made it. The dungeon designs are cancer though.

What the fuck is this boss design? I thought I was playing a Castlevania game when I fought this thing.

don't you zoomzooms all come with that surgically affixed extension of your hand called a "phone?" it comes with an easy search engine that gives you the answer, instantly. you should really invest in that extension before asking for high IQ results...

I can understand ragedropping games like Shinobi 2 where some of the first enemies in the game require maximum pattern recognition, but seriously bro, Darknuts are just jump and stab.

Similar situation here.

Neighbour kid came over one day excited about his new golden game cartridge. We played it, but I don't remember much of it, so I guess Zelda 2 didn't impress me lol

The Gargoyle's Quest games are similar in that there's a top down overworld but the actual action sequences are 2D platforming. They're so fun too.

There's a middle aged woman that streams Faxanadu on Twitch. She plays it the same way every time since she was like 6 years old. Pretty cool game.

Just had a dream that Trump likes Zelda 2 and he plays it all the time (and is really good). I watched him play and he came upon a variant of one of these guys >>11807298 in a hallway at a dining table, but it was a cyclops and instead of maces or whatever it shot big long eyeballs out of its eyeball. He expertly maneuvered up to it and slew that motherfucker and kept on. I'll note that in this dream version, the game seamlessly transitioned between side-by and top-down during the fight, so it was more like if Zelda 2 had retained the original top-down experience from Zelda 1 and also added on the side-by scrolling. I actually hot my hands on the game and played that version of Z2 in my dream. It was fun.

I was like 4/5 years old when I went to the rich kid's house. He had an NES and he played this game. He pushed buttons and I saw the dialogue come up on the screen and I realized that HE COULD TALK TO THE PEOPLE IN THE GAME BY PUSHING THE BUTTON TO TALK TO THEM. OH MY GOD THIS IS AMAZING THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER

I realize that this comes off as a basedpost, but I was very impressed at the time.
