After playing this, I agree that it feels like a completely unrelated game with the Batman IP slapped onto it. Almost every enemy is some kind of robot, cyborg, jetpack ninja, tank, weird giant monster and I have no clue what the fuck the bosses are even supposed to be. The "cutscenes" between levels trying to follow the Tim Burton's movie story is almost comical.

I guess... but it feels enough like Batman in how it plays, the dark aesthetic and its OST also fit the IP well, so it gets a pass in my eyes. If you'd prefer something that follows Tim Burton's film more closely, I'd suggest Sunsoft's very own Genesis title, it's mostly overshadowed by their NES effort in online discourse, but I'd argue it's just as good, if not better if you value accuracy like me.

Possibly, but they also could've just thought that it was cooler to have Batman fight a bunch of robots and ninjas and cyborgs, instead of just endless waves of generic handgun-wielding goons.

That's kinda just Sunsoft's style. You look at Fester's Quest and that game was, despite suspicions to the contrary, really just designed to be the way it was from the ground up.

This goes even for Journey To Silius, which was going to be a Terminator game (and apparently a VERY different one to what we finally got):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBpJB2NmUOg
The early 'quick time event' style game they were noodling on, following the plot of the movie, apparently didn't pan out, so they start over and make the sidescrolling action platformer. They apparently did not mention this to the film studio, or show it to them at any earlier point, then submitted it after they considered it finished, whereupon the studio told them to fuck off, revoking their Terminator license. (Perhaps they had seen the first build and was expecting that).

So Sunsoft retools it into an original property, but best I can tell, they didn't change all that much with the known versions of the sidescrolling action one, and likely this take on Terminator never was all that close at any point.

That's how it was back then.

Games were made by Japan and Western IPs could sell them in the West, that simple. These games weren't made under the guise of honoring source material or creating the ultimate Batman etc gaming experience, just kinda thrown together to be close enough to recognizable. It wasn't art school kids making these it was old random Japanese guys trying to make a buck

I think the human bosses are supposed to be Killer Moth, Electrocutioner, and Firebug (not Firefly; they're actually separate characters in the comics). Originally, Joker wasn't even going to be the final boss, but I'm glad they changed that in the final release.

Almost every game back then had the bad guys be robots unless it was blatantly a game about the US military or a member of them, then the enemies could be Soviets.

I'm not sure, it has difficulty settings and limited continues, unlike the NES version, so on Easy I'd say it's much easier than on NES, but on Hard? It can be a challenge simply because of getting sent back to the title screen if you fail too much, so I'd say that it's close enough for that alone, certainly worth a try.

It's always interesting to rhink about just how familiar the devs were with the IPs they were adapting. Like Terminator was popular in Japan, so I wouldn't be surprised if people working on it knew and were fond of the movie. Even though it isn't really a licensed games, the Japanese version of Monster Party withall the parodies did seem to have been developed by horror fans, since some of their pseudonyms in the credits even implement random horror references. And then of course Castlevania was absolutely made by fans of old American horror films. I guess the difference with the latter two is that they weren't commissioned licensed properties, but seemingly internally generated ideas, so the references were likely organic and not some businessman telling them "make a game based on [hot new thing], have it done in 4 months"

This is one of three games I actually own for the NES. Bought some dude's two NES and a conttoller off his wife for $40 on CL a couple years ago and this was the first game I bought from the local retro vidya store to test the systems. Excellent game. It really gets you going. Love the music. Love the controls. The wall jumping is lit. The punching is great. Batman's guns are very good and I love that he actually has them. I've made it to Joker, but haven't beaten him yet. One day he's going down.

Joker is easy once you know the trick. Always stay close and punch the shit out of him, except when he raises his arm to make thunders fall, then you need to take two steps back. Then immediately get close start punching again.

It did seem to be that way back then, I always figured it was because it's easier to portray your character murdering robots than actual humans. Same with how the TMNT cartoon changed the foot soldiers to being robots whereas in the og comic they were ninja humans or whatever.

This is one of those games like Castlevania that's more about careful planning than pure action, since you aren't fast, there is a delay to your jump and even cycling through the weapons can fuck you over. Most enemies are faster than you and will fuck you up if you're unprepared. Like those big jumping mutants, if you let them have their way and don't shoot them when they're at the edge of the screen there's a high chance you're fucked.
