All of humanity is getting older due to time compression. For the same reason we are living longer than even our grandparents.
Yes, in the 90s it was reasonable for a 36 year old to be the team's wise experienced guy. The average age threshold to be considered a "young, inexperienced protagonist" is being pushed further and further back in japanese media. More and more works now depict 18-25 year olds as practically teenagers, while 30s are the new 20s.

Fox is 25. not exactly super young. doesn't really make sense to call someone 36 an old man when you're 25.
if Fox was 18 it would make more sense because at 18 you do think 36 is old and its exactly twice 18

First of all those average lifespans are from living in the wild, hares are easy prey to many predators. Not even many predators are easy off. Average lifespan of a fox is 3-4 years, but ones in captivity have lived around 13-15 or so, about as long as pet dogs.

Second there are animals that can live far longer than humans, there are turtles out there which are in their 100s, there is one which is estimated to be around 200 years old.

... also, we're talking about anthropomorphic alien space animal-people here, so I doubt any of the lifespans of normal Earth animals apply.

Foxes are notoriously skittish, especially around humans. The only way I can see one attacking a human, even a baby, is if it was rabid or the human approached it while it was cornered/protecting it's young.

A fox wouldn't just run up to a human baby and attack it.

Sonic is SEGA's main mascot so of course they will still make Sonic games.

As for SoR and Shinobi, as much as I like PD those two franchises are much more well known and popular. All we got in the last 20 years was a remake of the first game.... with a remake of the second game promised years ago but absolutely no word of it since so it's pretty safe to assume it's dead, the last new entry to the PD series was over 20 years ago.

At this point I would be less surprised if they announced Space Channel 5 Part 3 or a new Space Harrier than if they announced a new Panzer Dragoon game.

Do you wanna know something really depressing? There are some men (even in ancient times) going either "oh wow is me. I'm 30 and I've accomplished nothing! Alexander united north Africa in conquest by the time he was 16 years old!" Or worse. "Alexander conquered Africa when he was a teenager! You're 20 years old and you're still in college! Why are you such a loser?"

Alexander lived in a time where the truths of nature were undeniable. It was literally the law of the strongest. He had to learn how to conquer lest he be conquered. There was no US army team to roll in if some barbarians came to town, you had to sort out your own shit.
Then societies grew bigger and started looking after each other and children stopped learning how to be men and started being stuffed in classrooms for 15 years straight learning absolutely nothing of importance to themselves, only so they can be good wagies. This change was slow and steady but today it is undeniable. Even in the 60s. You look at a 32 year old man and he looks to be in his late 40s (spending time outdoors in the sun helps with aging, of course).
If you look at the angry video game nerd, besides the bald, he doesn't look like he's in his mid 40s which he is.

I still believe in it just because it's cooler. G-diffusers can only work so much, especially since they're working with something more intense than any aircraft we have. It could make gravity more normal but would just be relative, and still do a number on your blood flow.

It makes somewhat more sense in the typical weird JRPG worlds where protagonists are like 15, but it's definitely an odd choice here, since Falco isn't even 10 years younger than Peppy yet is portrayed as a cocky young rebel. Would've been better had Peppy been closer to James's age, or even older. Like make him in his 50s or 60s or something to better hit home the wise mentor thing.

Fara Phoenix. Not really a girlfriend but definitely a love interest. She's an experienced pilot too. She also appears in the data or something for Star Fox 2 which is interesting. There's some weird lines where Fox mentions she looks just like his mother, what did he mean by this

Keep in mind even to this day Nintendo isn't really one to care too much about making games connected to each other.

It's the most "space opera" thing. Okay not really, but in the way something that would happen over space geopolitics(even though it was Andross over being jealous).
Which I guess that probably isn't what Star Fox is about, but god damn it if they're gonna reboot it so much let's see Andross being some evil space emperor doing space terrorist things. Shame he got immediately merked by space bugs, but that just leaves more room for a power vacuum and different factions trying take whatever they can get. And considering that Krystal is the sole fox survivor of some planet that isn't even part of the Lylat system, there's so much more shit out there.

True, but by that point you're considered too old to have fun. You're expected to fade into the background. Nobody will ever think you're cool unless you made it big 10 years ago. Your hair is probably falling out and your back is starting to hurt. Most people expect you to own a house and have a wife and kids. If you're a man without kids at that age you're a creepy uncle. Zoomers even use the word unc to refer to people in their mid 20s.

Because it was
SNES and SEGA games were still designed by coin-op arcade game principles, they were kept hard to make it hard to complete them quickly because usually they were pretty light on content.
Saveable games were pretty rare on the SNES, less than 200. If you weren't going to complete it one sitting you'd have to leave your console on, then you'd come home from school to find your mum's unplugged it to the use the vacuum.

The indicator was the Greatfox itself. The ship was literally the lifeline of Starfox and was on loan from James Mccloud before Fox. And of course in the last "good" starfox, Peppy retiring in assault and yeeting the greatfox was literally "the last kino moment". They rightfully gave it to him. Everything after was downhill, they replaced the greatfox with a dogshit dropship in command. It was like watching the series die in real time.

Saving was pretty common by the time SNES rolled around, it was NES where that was rare and they were mostly going by arcade rules, and yet even the NES had a lot of longform games that would not have been at all a fit for arcades. Super Mario World sure as hell was not a hard game, neither was Super Metroid, nothing like many NES games were.

Yeah I know, it's older than L Ron Hubbard deciding to start a cult, though I always felt that Star Fox treated it more as an extension of air-based combat for obvious reason.
Space as an ocean is usually more about tactics and spaceship warfare, though I guess aliens(native to space itself and not a planet) being weird fish beings stems from Lovecraft too.

When ever I see StarFox brought up nowadays its always people clamoring for a "proper" sequel to SF64. I disagree, story wise we've seen where this leads and it is stupid. I fully agree that gameplay needs to mirror 64 as close as possible but the story ends with the death of Andross. Any attempt to continue leads to some lame knock-off villain (or literally just Andross again as in the case of Adventures) and just takes away from the great victory that was earned from the Venom hard route. My ideal StarFox revival is a prequel. Have it star the original team: James, Peppy, and Pigma. Tell the story of Andross's banishment and Pigma's betrayal. Maybe have the tutorial level be Fox in the academy in a flight sim. This can be accomplished with the same minimalist story telling and fast paced on-rails action as SF64.

Read the rest of my post. The stakes were already as high as they can be. The Lylat system was under an existential threat from Andross. Now that he has been defeated you are left with two options:
A. Create some new big bad that will always come off as a cheap knock off of Andross (Aparoid Queen, Anglars or whatever the fuck from Command)
B. Sigh...somehow Andross has returned (Adventures and StarFox 2)
There is a reason that four of the eight Starfox games have told the exact same story with slight variations here and there.
>Retro wanted to make a Starfox game based on their mercenary work, going around accepting jobs and getting new recruits to play as, etc.
That sounds like it would lead to some open world shit. I personally don't want that, but yes the game should should make use of the fact that they are actually mercenaries, perhaps hit points translating to currency which can be used for upgrades like in Ace Combat.

To be fair, 36 is getting old for a fighter pilot.

G-forces are so intense on the body, reaction times so vital, and the equipment so expensive, that literally only the best of the best of the best qualify to be fighter pilot.

That said Slippy sounds like a literal child but he's 19, so the exaggeration is working in both chronological directions away from Fox: To him, Peppy nearing retirement, while Slippy is (literally) green and has only just begun his career.

Would Star Fox have been more popular if it had human characters?
The mascot characters add nothing to the franchise. The setting and gameplay have nothing to do with furry creatures. "But mascot creatures were popular." Yeah and the majority of those mascot creature franchises died. Even in their heydays, the most popular games were still games with human characters.
Admitedly some games do work better with mascot creatures. Donkey Kong works well in the original arcade games because he's the King Kong type antagonist to a human character, and in Donkey Kong Country they created the whole setting around the idea of jungle animals which works extremely well. Sonic works because his special abilities would look silly on a human, but the ball and homing dash fit a cartoon animal well.
What do the animal characters add to Star Fox? It's a series about piloting spacecrafts in a futuristic sci-fi world and fighting in space and various planets. The animals add nothing to this - in fact, they're opposed to it. If they had cool human pilots instead, the games would look cooler than with the animals. They can still keep their animal names, it works well for Solid Snake as a kind of codename.

I think the animal characters give it a charm and Miyamoto chose it for a reason. Star Fox was made to be a technical marvel but time catches on, but anime people fighting in space is still appealing to me even after triangles and squares stopped being technologically impressive.
It essentially makes them all aliens, fitting with the sci-fi space opera stuff but also all literally based on the Japanese version of "fighting like cats(monkeys) and dogs", which keeps it fun

>Would Star Fox have been more popular if it had human characters?
When is the last time you saw anyone talk about Star Glider? There's your answer, no, it would not have been.

Star Fox was originally just going to be another entry (Or possibly even reboot) into Rare's Star Glider series. Before they had joined Nintendo they had made two similar games called Star Glider 1 and 2, and thanks to the Gigaleak we have builds of Starfox from before they added the animal characters, where it was just called "SG" back then. I believe there was also an interview where they said originally they wanted to design the FX chip for the NES to make Star Glider on it.

Few ever talk about Star Glider without it just being a footnote in Rare/Star Fox's history when talking about Star Fox, and even fewer care about the series. How many other series that started out as FX games survived? None!. Nothing came of Dirt Trax, Stunt Race, World Gold, Vortex. Star Fox is the only one that became more than one game.

It would have just been Star Glider 3/a reboot of Star Glider, and been as forgotten as all the other FX games otherwise.

>The setting and gameplay have nothing to do with furry creatures.
Neither do most mascot franchises

>"But mascot creatures were popular." Yeah and the majority of those mascot creature franchises died.
That was when everyone was trying to copy Sonic with a "Mascot with attitude", no surprise most of these copycats (some literal) failed.

>>11821949
>Wouldn't that only apply in an environment WITH gravity...?
G-Force refers to the forces to acceleration, not gravity. You would still experience those when accelerating and turning even in space. Also, half the levels take place right above a planet's surface as if they were airplanes.

>I think the animal characters give it a charm and Miyamoto chose it for a reason.
After finding out it was originally a Star Glider game, the cynic in me tells me that reason is so they could own the IP.

Argonaut. Rare only did Adventure. Assault was done by Namco. Unfortunately Argonaut's track record is kinda soiled by Command.
I didn't know or assume that Starfox was originally intended as a another Starglider game, I just assumed they focused on gameplay solely and let Nintendo do the art and fluff like characters. They did another game for Nintedo, X on the Gameboy, but it was released only in Japan. It does similar impressive feats to Starfox but on even limited hardware, I don't know if that's technically a Starglider game either. I don't know about the gigaleak stuff so if that's true, it probably did originally get birthed as a Starglider game.
Another game that really influenced Star Fox was the arcade game Starblade by Namco. Just look it up, the 3D is amazing for 1991, and you'll see that the Armada level in Starfox 1 took a lot from it. But that's another game that I only know in a line of things that influenced Star Fox like StarGlider before it. I really do think the funny animals in space make players more attached. It fuels the imagination.

Right, my bad. Got Rare and Argonaut confused with each other. And it was definitely a Star Glider game initially. They had made two Star Glider games before, they said they wanted to create the FX chip to make an NES Star Glider game, we know they didn't initially plan to put animal characters in it, and in the alpha versions from the Gigaleak that are before they added the animal characters the game is referred to as "SG" not "SF" or "StarFox"
