What am I in for? I just got a copy of this for next to nothing and I've never played it

It's somewhat like a British GTA. I remember the story & voice acting being pretty engaging, and it had no HUD which was quite unique for the time/genre. Also I think it may have invented resting to recuperate (rather than using a health bar)

I do recall it being hard af though. I was young when I played so was never good enough to beat it but apparently it's a common sentiment online that it's really hard

A frustrating mess with tons of horrible design choices

Driver 3 if all the money Take2 wasted on bribing vidya journos actually got spent on actually developing their bloody game.

It's interesting driving around on free mode for a day or two.
That's it. Never got into the gameplay and I hate the driving physics.
t. bong who used to work for many years in Central London where the game is set

I tried it last year, the pressure sensitive buttons were a blight for driving. I should try it again, but I didn't like its control scheme.

This is my impression so far about 2 hours in. The storyline seems stupid... but the cinematics are very well done for PS2.

I liked both of them, cars are realistic too.

I got stuck at a particular level in a warehouse and never carried on with the story. I just stuck to the free driving mode which could be unlocked with a cheat.
Apparently the map was very accurate to London at the time too. Shame that the third game for the PS3 ended up getting canned.

Did you ever try to drive a fire engine or a bus though? The driving controls were very heavy for those. Also remember that the mission directions when driving were done using the indicators too.

I never played it either. It was a launch title or close to it and I was still rocking the ps1 when it came out. The stills I saw in a magazine ad looked photorealistic and made me want a ps2 really bad. By the time I got a ps2 vice city was out and I forgot the getaway even existed.

It's a weird game but highly enjoyable, it's extremely 'cinematic' and is nothing like GTA aside from being about a criminal that drives a car.
The game strives for a realistic tone which can be frustrating sometimes and clashes with the fact you'll have nissan skylines full of chinamen with AKs coming at you almost constantly towards the end of 'ammond's story, traversal can be a total mess but as someone that's lived in london that's pretty fucking realistic.
Oh yeah and there's a whole second campaign where you play as a cop following the destruction the main character causes which I thought was pretty neat.
Overall I like it and have replayed it multiple times, it's a shame the series never really went anywhere.

Nah it wasn't a launch title, I remember waiting ages for the thing to come out, I think it even ended up coming out after Vice City which really ruined its chances.

I just looked it up and you’re right. It must have been delayed, I remember pretty vividly seeing that magazine ad for it right around launch because it was focused on how next-gen it looked

Yeah it was either delayed or Sony were just being Sony and advertised it much too early because they knew the impressive screenshots would drive PS2 sales even if the game was still a way off.

My favorite ps2 game, you had kinda of like MGS type action sequences and then you had to drive to the next location but you had to treat it kind of seriously and actively avoid cars and the cops. Places like IGN just totally didn't get it. At the time it was just so much detail to take it, just walking around, looking inside the interiors or buildings you can go into, it was just a fun exploration game. Nowdays there are so many open world games so it would probably seem much less impressive but I haven't played it for years. I didn't even find it that hard, you just had to not rush in like in doom.
The sequal I thought ruined what made the 1st good.

What the fuck were they thinking with the controls? Triangle to equip a weapon, R1 to auto-aim (which kind of makes sense), square to shoot, fucking left stick to manually aim

a crappy game that desperately wants to be a movie and "fixes" the video gamey things by adding pointless realism that isnt even realistic to begin with. setting the controller down while your character leans against the wall to regain his health (complete with his bloodstains vanishing) is so much dumber than just having him walk over a medkit. that at least implies some sort of medical attention. the game is full of annoyances like these. i was very impressed with the graphics at the time and the story stuff is at least entertaining from what i remember.
