Gotou is based on Yukio Mishima
Thorman is supposed to be Truman. They say it wasn't intentional but come on
The neutral guy at the end I think is meant to be Lao Tzu
I think it's kinda cool, an attempt to make it feel "real" to our world

Thorman is not a real person or based on one, he's a disguise used by the god Thor (get it? Thor-man?) under orders from YHVH to use America's nuclear arsenal as his Hammer and destroy human civilization.

If anything he's symbolizing the pagans who converted to Christianity and worship God, which essentially is the Western world and the basis of Western culture as we know it today.

I think the guy who made Look outside took inspiration from this game very similar vibe. Anyway what I hate about both these games is that they're worlds in which hell objectively exist yet they don't treat God and Jesus as the ultimate means of salvation and instead the true ending is some weird acceptance of their fucked up bleak world. Fuck that nigga I want Jesus to come here purge everything and make it all perfect and clean.

Because I hate to break it to you, but that's what "accept this one specific god as the ultimate salvation" comes off as exactly like that to any secular/polytheistic/non-abrahamic society like Japan. The true, Neutral ending in 1 is Taoist.

He is based on Thor, but who else do you think was also an American politician who had a t-r-man liked name who dropped nukes on Japan.
Stephen in SMT also isn't literal actual Stephen Hawking in real life, just heavily inspired by him

The original PlayStation was a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony and it was talked about as such in magazines. PSX differentiated from that (and it's Sony itself that called it that, or rather PS-X).

Thorman being an Ambassador is what convinces me that the Truman->Thorman thing is just a coincidence due to the nukes. He's not really a US representative or politician, but the troops on the ground are obeying his orders anyway. He's magically (or through God's power) taking control of the US nuclear stockpile to scorch the Earth, and Gotou is magically (or through Lucifer's power) conjuring a sphere of protection around Tokyo that would only make the nukes destroy the whole world BUT the demon-ridden Tokyo.

Hey same here actually. It's pretty good. I just think it drags on a little. I just entered post apocalyptic Tokyo, killed the Yakuza boss / Thor and apparently I'm only just over halfway point.

I'd call it 1/4th of the way through. You'll spend the next 1/4th going to various locations one after the other, then you'll spend 1/4th getting to the final dungeon, then you'll spend the last quarter inside the final dungeon.

dont get too worried about your allignment as you can change it when you get to tokyo destiny land.
(or you can just cheat and keep it w/e allignment you want using codes on duckstation)
Staying on neutral does give you more bosses to fight and canon ending is generally considered to be the neutral ending as it leads into smt2 which sadly isnt translated on ps1

It's not that hard to navigate. It's like they took one area in Megami Tensei 1 and put it in SMT1.
Anonymous No.11814002 [Report] >>11814732
>>11813853
Don't worry too much, its not as difficult or cryptic as some hype it up to be. I'd actually vote SMT1 as one of the easier titles.

Just some general advice
>Agility stat helps with escapes too
>Luck is worth it, helps with lots of things including inflicting status effects
>guns are your status inflicters, get some Sleep or Charm bullets
>Zio spells are insanely busted due to Shock
>fuse when you can, as demons don't level up
>MAG is not consumed out of doors, in case you need to farm. Keep an eye on demons' Cost Points. Keep an eye out for enemies that drop a lot of MAG.
>buffs and debuffs are powerful, I kept a Hobgoblin from Shinjuku until the endgame just because he had Tarukaja on him.
>keep utility spells like Traesto, Tetraja, etc for ease of travel and protection
>use those goddamn Incenses
And most importantly, have fun!

Angel + Fairy to fuse Kushinada-Hime (Princess Kushinda) for Estoma to bypass random encounters. You gain very little for slogging through hundreds of battles once you recruit demons you need; the bosses hand out insane amounts of xp.
Anonymous No.11814418 [Report] >>11814506
>>11813983
It's not about being hard to navigate, but that simply navigating it is a chore due to literally every step (on some floors) triggering 2-4 encounters in a row.
Anonymous No.11814506 [Report]
>>11814418
Can't stress enough to use Estoma in the SNES games. It doesn't just marginally slow down encounter rates like the PS2 games. It turns them off completely. You can and should be doing full estoma as soon as you know what spawns in an area.

SMT uses themes from all sorts of religions because the developers find it cool and interesting, it's not actually meant to be a religious commentary or represent real-world faiths closely

Guns are broken. Especially when you get machine guns and charm bullets. Before then you can get sleep and I believe paralysis bullets that are good too. Be warned, you're gonna make the whole game easy doing this.
Funny thing is that they didn't fix in in smt2 either.
Gonna start If... Soon, I wonder if it's still the same there.

>guns are better than knives and swords
what a concept
Anonymous No.11816812 [Report]
Almost every boss will become 'Shocked' and skip their turn in SMT 1 if the Heroine uses her Zio skills. You can use this to stunlock (nearly) every boss including the final bosses.

In SMT 2, offensive magic is worthless and guns are the only things that deal any damage until you start to gather the Pillars to go to the Abyss. Then you will switch over to your swords while having a party of demons using nothing but the insanely overpowered -kaja moves every single turn while occasionally casting a full party heal.
Don't sex the Hiroko...

They sort of addressed it by making ammo consumable (i.e. a machine gun hitting 8 times spends 8 bullets) but if you don't mind dedicating the inventory space, you could just carry like 8 stacks of 99 sleep/charm/whatever bullets.
