8-bit grand strategy games and similar from the same era? Pic related has the pitfall of being a late Famicom game and is a little on the simple side, but is pretty fun in terms of how you have to manage your units, resources and territory. I can play it for 30-60 minutes and like the progress I'm making on a given scenario and come back to it again. Plus supports four players.

There are few of those which are largely forgotten today. Now if you want "grand", check out Cosmic Wars. According to the translator it's a 300+ hours game, and I believe it considering that the first mission alone takes between 1 and 2 hours to complete and later on in the game there are missions where you have to manage several battlefields at once.
I never made much progress though because the learning curve at the start is tough considering that enemy units have different looks than your units so you have to learn to recognize twice as many units at first just to get a grasp of what's going on

Does that game have shooting sequences? I might be confusing it with Daiva, another Famicom game which is a 3-in-1 combination of shooting, 2D stages and a strategy element but neither of which look very solid.

Little Magic (Japan) [T-En by Gaijin Productions & TransBRC v0.33 alpha] [i]_005

No, it's basically Famicom Wars in Space and you get another layer of general General stragey before the fights on the field

iirc some of the early gachapon games had shooting segments. Which reminds me of Little Magic, a strategy game but the fights are in real time (which makes them really easy; although you can set it to auto battle as well)

I've given all the GS games a whirl and I think I like 3 the most, though 2 is probably the most solid (personally the action sequences feel very undercooked to me). The first on FDS is too slow to bother with and basically is fully outpaced by 2. I really like the battle system in 3 and the quasi-Final Fantasy presentation when the action plays out. It can be a bit unfair though, and the Sengoku and Knight Gundam maps seem to involve a bit of trial and error in terms of learning where your bases are. Haven't played enough of 4, I liked what I played of the campaign mode but I hit a wall on the stage in which you only have automated units and you are vastly outnumbered. Didn't like how it completely changed the battle system established in 3 either. They would return to the action sequences of the first two games with GX on the SFC, and that game does seem to have some dedicated players still with how big the maps are.

Not grand strategy but if you want a simple, cozy TB strategy game on 8bit try Fushigi no Umi no Nadia. Similar to famicom wars and SRW.
