you're just supposed to autistically keep trying till you've memorized the game like the back of your hand. luckily its a fun enough game to inspire infinite attempts

It’s all memorization and timing. The kids that impressed you by beating it in 1 sitting played it over and over until they could do that more than likely

If you ever played through with save states or rewind, you'd see how easy it is when you can actually practice properly. Contra isnt really hard, it's more just very unforgiving and high memo

once you can beat it with the code, you'll notice you start beating it with more and more lives remaining. eventually you'll be able to do it without the cod, just keep practicing. that's the only way to git gud. no one 1cc a game on their first play.

the arcade version is the definitive version, but unfortunately nintendo fans have rewritten history with their watered down half-assed port

I don't think I got the autism. Maybe I'm just too old and I've been coddled by Castlevania and Mario 3 that lets me keep banging my head against the wall every world until I beat it. I'm not one of those gamers that can treat an entire videogame as just one big level I have to memorize. It's why I can't get into shmups and games like ghost and goblins either.

I would use save states but those make me feel icky to use

The arcade version is good but the NES version perfected it. The game is better suited to a horizontally oriented screen. The only thing I like less about the NES version is that level 3 is a slog in it

based. a dying breed
i will also suck off super contra's arcade game to no end, it's peak arnold and sly worship and it's my fav of the series. only thing i'll agree with is some of the graphics look like shit, but little things like getting hit and standing back up were only done there

Once you've played it a few times the later levels are just hold right and jump a few times, literally a hold right to win game, I don't consider this a bad thing, its fun to play a game you know you can beat in 1 sitting

>>11815905
I got stuck at the boss the moves towards you, I think I had to watch a video to realize you could jump over it, even smaller bosses you die if you try to jump over them. The last half of the game is easier than the waterfall.

I played in on DS expecting it to be crap but its pretty much the NES version with better graphics but in TATE mode.

It's just replaying a game until you get good at it.

the arcade version is easy mode. it even limits your continues to 3 so you don't feel too bad if you can't 1cc it

Perhaps instead of savestates you could try romhacks, but I understand your dilemma. I personally have to approach these games with an entirely different mindset, instead of treating them like "modern games" (I consider 97 the start of this) you treat it as if you're going into an arcade and play them as such. I tend to play these games for 30-60 minutes before going to a different one and just over time you develop skill and memorization of these games until you're beating them in that hour-ish time frame.
Now if you're just plain not getting enjoyment out of them then you probably just need a buddy since basically all of these games are designed to be played 2 player. I mean shit for the longest time I thought the Konami code was literally made only for 2 player modes.

I played the game once when it came out, it was pretty hard. Everyone told me about the cheat code, but I called them all faggots and I told them emulators will be a thing soon. I beat the game without using a cheat code.

I played it a lot on my shitty PowerStation when I was 5. I can beat it with just one life. During high school my homies didn't trust my world until I show them on a friend's Wii.

Contra for NES is kino, Metal Slug X is the shit too.
