I never used it. The only game that I had that I knew used the IR port was Pokemon Pinball and that was only used for trading high scores.

I never used it.
I either used the link cable, only a few times, or much more likely loaded my Pokemon cart into Stadium.

there was a rumor in my area that you didn't need a link cable to trade pokemon, and everyone would sit there trying to get it to work even though it in fact does not work at all for that purpose

Nintendo sole that idea from Hudson's GB Kiss Link btw. Except GB Kiss Link was better because you could also connect to a computer and get DLC (actual DLC, but free) for your Game Boy games.

it's sad that it's not actually "sending" the gift over. it's just displaying a code that tells your cart to give you the gift.
