With retro, personal computers were always the reference platform. Not consoles.

DOS versions were often inferior ports of console or arcade originals. Virgin Aladdin, Mortal Kombat, Mega Man are some examples

I'm not OP, faggot. I made one post >>11820950 which also flies in the face of ignorant jackasses tend to think about jap development. That Mega Man game was made by ONE dude who ran a company that crapcom bought out just to manage porting and localization duties. He wasn't happy doing that, so he started making a Mega Man game because he liked Mega Man. That's it.

Fast forward a bit and he quit but was too fucking stupid to take code home with him, so he just slapped together what he could and shipped it out the fucking door under the Capcom USA banner even though he wasn't working there anymore. It's a bad example.

In the 90's you could find everything on computers. Every genre was covered, and tons of console ports or multi plats that people today don't even consider or know exist, and they were often the bests versions of the games. It's only starting with the 00's that things started getting grim on computers, hence why there are such opposite takes on the matter, you can tell who lived to see computer gaming in the 90's and who didn't.
Pic related, a PC magazine from 1996 with a hundred playable demos. It came out every 3 months, with every time between 70 and 100 playable demos. Meanwhile on PSX they were happy with 6 playable demos and 3 videos.

PC gaming back then was complicated in every way
Most importantly there were less multiplatform games back then. PS1 had its own exclusives like Spyro The Dragon and Tekken, meanwhile PC had its own games like C&C Red Alert 2 and SWAT 3. Exclusives weren't the exception, they were the norm.
And even when console originals came to PCs, it wasn't always better like how the early 2000's Capcom ports such RE4 and DMC3 had major issues with keybinding. Sometimes you also had to wait a long time, it took 2 years for Metal Gear Solid 1 to get a PC port.
Some PC ports were also just awful. Bad graphics, bad controls, terrible DRM and so on. PC port of MGS2 comes to mind as an infamous bad port due to its bad controls and not supporting non-Geforce GPUs without a post-launch patch.
Let's not forget the games that weren't ports at all either. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon was third person shooters on consoles, but first person on PC.

demos aren't games
PC was considered the poor kid platform where you had to "make do" with inferior clones of good console games. the only place where PC excelled was in strategy games/autism simulators.

Not accurate, it really depends what the original platform for the software was.

Like the Windows version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles (which doesn't use emulation) sure as fuck isn't the reference version.

Back then, the Windows 95 version of Sonic CD was the better way to play the game by the way, faster loading times and better special stage performance than the SEGA CD release.
Anonymous No.11821363 >>11821516
>>11821314
They're demos of games, the point being with so many demos available it only shows how much games there were. Secondly a PC cost 4000$ or equivalent in the 90's, it was the poor kids that only played on consoles. Finally in the 90's for PC gaming every genre was covered so everything you just said is wrong.

>>11821340
>Not accurate, it really depends what the original platform for the software was.

It's a game per game basis but PC versions used to be better than the current meme speak lead to believe. People always use the same two or three examples to try and show how "poor" PC ports were, like RE4/DMC, which were from the 00's, even though if you just take the RE example 1/2/3 had some great PC versions. Or how people associate "Tomb Raider trilogy" with the PSX but the PC versions were and are still by far the bests. I'd also argue Final Fantasy 7 and 8 were best on PC, it was pretty mindblowing for FF8 how great it looked if you had the right GPU, but for those people always meme speak the midi music as if midi had to be windows' default soundfont and nothing else and while being unaware that the games came with midi programs to customize how you wanted them to sound (meaning they never played them).

Sonic CD on PC has more loading screens (every time you time travel there's an extra load screen that's not on Sega CD). And source about the special stages performing better?

Unless you have a hardware Yamaha XG-compatible sound card, you'll have to do as follows
>Install Yamaha S-YXG50 software synth from the FF7 install disc
>upgrade that to S-YXG/DM from the FF8 install disc
The software upgrade that came with FF8 is useless by itself, and there's no instructions for this shit or acknowledged anywhere that you need to first install the softsynth bundled with FF7. And if you weren't able to find a copy of FF7 for PC to do this with, you needed to buy just the software synth which was a fairly expensive paid package.
Most people just ended up playing with General Midi through the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth included with Windows.

As a confirmed and hardened PC fag in the 90s, FPSs (until Halo), strategy, RPGs (with the notable exception of Final Fantasy VII) and Point and Click adventures were all far superior, and PCs were the intended market for all these games. We had a great time with demos and shareware, and I would generally argue that apart from smooth scrolling 2D, most of the important graphical advances happened on the PC in the 1990s.

Platformers, sports games, beat em ups, shmups, arcade games and 3D action adventures were all better on consoles though, and were mainly made with them in mind; the very clear and demonstrable reason being sales; just compare how Resident Evil 2 sold on the PC compared to the Playstation, and think about how you would target your game as a dev trying to make your paymasters happy.

Ok? Nobody played on them until the 90s because:
1. Computers were more expensive than consoles (still are)
2. Any pc game before the 90s is a massive pile of shit.

I'm surprised at how many people didn't game on a PC at least a little. I was poor and we still had consoles and eventually a PC. Had an apple ii at one point also. PC ging was a whole different paradigm shift from consoles, refreshing but frustrating. I nearly destroyed our first PC by downloading too many games and deleting files I shouldn't have, fun times.

It is my firm belief that anyone who didn't play games both on computers and consoles growing up didn't know shit about video games and probably still don't unless they really made an effort to catch up. Having a computer to play games in the 80's and 90's really opened up new horizons to the point that I believe someone with a computer and only a couple of consoles will have had more general video game knowledge than someone who had every consoles and no computer.
