When you lvl up, drawing itself becomes easier, enemies have better spells to draw, they drop better items (which can be turned into spells), and there are innate stat boosts. It is much easier to gain APs and spells when you play the game normally, otherwise you really have to go out of your way to get anything.
This is coming from someone who did a no lvl-up run way back when, only using personal knowledge, before it was cool to do so and before there was a single guide on the subject. Yes you can break the game by not leveling up if you know what you're doing, but anyone that recommends others not to lvl up for their first playthrough is a gigantic idiot who I can promess you, did NOT play it like that on their first play.
