For me it was a place called "The Library." The joke was that kids were supposed to tell their parents they were going to the library.

I heard from a friend that it shut down because the owner was a pedo, but I still don't know if he was fucking with us or not. Probably made up, but puts a dark spin on the joke if true.

I mean you get a bunch of youths together without much adult supervision, there was probably the occasional dust up and that alone is enough to get an exaggerated reputation even in a mostly peaceful place. The middle / high school rumor mill was a crazy thing back then, people said all sorts of stupid shit.
Besides that I'd imagine the amount of actual fights would depend heavily on the individual place, already being in a rough neighborhood (maybe gang presence), how late are they open, is alcohol / drunks present, that sort of thing. The arcade at my local mall was fine, never felt like a dangerous place even as a small child and I think that would be the norm for most people.

Pretty sure this would just depend massively on the area the arcade was in and the owners. Not at all hard to imagine nice, safe arcades, alongside sithole arcades with drug deals.
Thread probably made by an incredibly sheltered person who cant fathom how different the various parts of the US (and world) are, if I had to guess

Fixed that for you dumbfuck. Way to miss the point of my post. There were tens of thousands of arcades across the globe and not all of them had nearly the same vibe or clientele. Some were violent, most were fairly normal.

Not really. I've seen open air drug deals and gambling over this that or the other but I've never seen any actual danger, though I often heard about it. I did once see the aftermath of something. An arcade was shot up and all the windows were destroyed and a few machines damaged. It's a Starbucks now.
>80s
Sho'nuff.
My mum owned one in the 80s and ours wasn't dangerous because we were in a civilised country and not the US but when we moved to America, shit was bad, Tommy. Real bad.

I never saw a seriously unsafe arcade in the US beyond just having blacks around

the biggest ones with the best games outside of like NYC were usually mini golf places and in malls, meaning they were filtered to having car access. If a place was shithole enough to be violent it was shithole enough that the sticks and buttons were all busted and the game was old.

Can you fuckers stop using reddit and actually google shit? Here's an actual case of violence at an arcade, with a link to the article archive:
https://www.chicagotribune.com/1988/03/22/youth-charged-in-stabbing-death/
Of course altercations happened at arcades, next you're gonna say going outside is dangerous because people get shot.
