Well, I told myself I'd never do it but thanks to some careful note taking, many runs back to the item box and a little bit of patience, I finally beat REmake with Chris. Ever since the original RE1, I've avoided playing as Chris due to his measly 6 item slots but all things considered it really wasn't so bad. Now I can finally put down the game and never, ever play as Chris again because fuck returning to the item box every 5 minutes.

those are some terrible stats, do it again.

Everything wrong with RE1 could be fixed by not having to use inventory slots for keys.

I get that they don't want players carrying around a RE4-tier portable armory but fuck, man. Even if you free up whatever slots you're using for keys then assuming you have at least one healing item at most Chris could carry two guns with ammo and have *one* slot open for puzzle items, which woulnd't even be enough for half the puzzles in the game. The severely limited inventory solved a problem that didn't exist.

RE's inventory issues were fixed in Outbreak by letting you swap items in your inventory for items on the ground. As a tradeoff they reduced the total number of inventory slots you could have and it works great.

Honestly it would have been nice if they let you use items directly off the ground like RE0. If every item you interacted with gave you the option to pick it up, use it, combine it or leave it there, it would have done a lot to alleviate the inventory problems, especially with Chris. Being able to immediately use a herb or load ammo directly into your gun without having to pick anything up would be a great quality of life improvement without diverging too far from the core design of the game.

It's a great game (and one of the best remakes ever at that) so I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. It's just that I've already beaten it and the original as Jill and wanted something a little different this time around. Constant return trips to the item box are just a pain in the ass and there's no two ways about it.

Remake even makes it easier by making self defense items (obviously something not in the original) not take up item slots

I've never played 0 but isn't the system a little different in that? I thought you could just put down items wherever you want. In Outbreak you can only swap, you can't just drop items.

Yeah, the one where it says Easy under Jill's profile. Everything about her scenario indicates it's the tutorial playthrough (Barry kills the first zombie, game makes you walk around the hall to learn the layout, you can skip the shotgun puzzle and get it early, you get the serum immediately, you get the passcode to bypass the basement and so on) so having you not use the ink ribbons either tracks with that.

They're also labeled as Easy and Hard in the Japanese Playstation releases. Only the PC port let Jill save without ribbons for whatever reason.

The very first time I played RE1 I played as Chris and eventually beat it as him before ever playing as Jill and I honestly hate playing as Jill. It feels like baby mode and is just boring. I think I have beaten the game once as Jill maybe twice.

As for REmake, the game kinda just sucks in general but it particularly sucks as Chris. They completely ruined the balance of the game and it shows. In RE1 it feels like you're supposed to play as Chris and Jill is the easy mode. Im remake it feels like you're supposed to play as Jill with Chris being the fuck you mode. It's not unplayable but it's a hell of a lot less fun.

My first few playthroughs of the original were the longbox version with no autoaim, where I actually found Chris to be alot easier than Jill

While Chris has like a warrior role (stronger and bigger melee weapon and more health), Jill is a rogue (Can unlock the doors with a picklock and can carry more things in the inventory).

It's easier with Jill because it's easier exploring a dungeon as a rogue than as a warrior.

While I can agree with this the expansion of puzzles, addition of a bunch of extra puzzle items, and the gay ass crimson head mechanics makes the game significantly worse for Chris. In the original I pretty much always had a free space or I would use the items taking them up before I got more. REmake there's at least 3 occasions I can remember that needed me to run back to the box and run back to the area either to pick up something or use something.
