Speed stat > everything else. You literally lose turns by having low speed, so certain characters are just bad.

Try to max additions as soon as you unlock them.
Don't make a team of Dart, Albert and Kongol or you'll be barraged by attacks.
Use magic items with Miranda.
Stardust isn't missable, but don't go clicking around stuff or you won't know which ones you got or not. Best to not get any until you want to get them all. Or just use a guide.
There's a boss on disc 3 where the game itself will warn you it's going to come, and to NOT USE DRAGOON FORM. Spoilerish, but it has to do with a magical rod.

Find a better game. This shit is tedious and unrewarding and generic.
Also guarding is surprisingly more useful than in other rpgs. You regen a small portion of your max HP and you take half damage that round.

The addition mechanic is fun but it's a long game with long repetitive attack animations. By the time you reach disc 4 you will be begging for the game to end. It's still a great adventure and all the locations are kino.

Use Shana. She gets more dragoon levels because of her consistent bow attack that you don't have to do additions for, and her magic/summon is strong as fuck.

You basically never want to be a dragoon. You're stronger in normal form.

The black dragoon has a special skill the suck the magic out of the enemies and PISS it down on your team mates for extra MP. It's really hot.

Use save states to practice the harder additions.

I have a few tips for you
speed is everything dart albert ax man is hard mode while dart haschel meru is easy mode.
you can buy some potions that will lower your encounter rate and they are very useful to save time.
bomb items are very good when used by characters with high magic stats.
git gud at additions.

Mostly generic RPG but there's 3 features that I wish more games of this genre utilized
1. Guard is vital rather than being mostly useless due to it healing 10%.
2. You can only carry 32 items. This forces you to strategize the items to carry for defense and to actually use offensive ones instead of holding crap you'll never use.
3. The player icon changes color the closer you are to a random battle.

Make use of attack items on bosses since they deal much more damage than other attacks in the early-mid game, especially when using their weakness. Elements can be intuited by the color of the textbox used for enemy names, red is fire, green is wind, etc.

I really wanted to like this one but just couldn't force myself to finish it. Combats insanely basic and boring. The additions get repetitive fast and unless you're in your dragoon form you can't even use magic attacks. Most of the time all you can do is attack with your singular attack or defend. Outside of that the story is kinda boring and the translation is poor and not in a way that's entertaining, its just stiff.

I really liked the environments and the music, completely carried the game for me for as far as I played but it wasn't enough to get me to the end.

You can find two sachets in Hellena, one in a pit and the other as a drop from a boss fight. This is an item that does 10 damage to anything.

Though this may seem useless, there are rare enemies in the game that can only be harmed for 1 damage under specific circumstances. Sachet will instantly kill these.

My redneck air conditioning guy recently saw me playing FFVIII and recommended LoD to me. I might give it a shot too.

Beat disc one and it was so damn generic. Disc two starts and we're just somewhere else with no explanation. This shit fucking sucks. When I swapped discs and realized the game has FOUR I lost all desire to keep going.
A turn using dragoon form and attacking literally takes nearly a minute before the next character gets to go AND the fucking dragoon form damage is so shit compared to just normally attacking.
The only positives this game has are the environments can look cool and guarding has more benefits than usual.

I really like the battle system because you have to perform additions succesfully to level them up. and the additions themselves were just hard enough that they took practice but werent overly frustrating. so with each battle I got the dopamine hit of leveling up my additions more as well as the regular exp. plus the dragoon transformations are badass, they only seem worthless at first cause you only get one turn with them but once your dragoon levels get higher the battle system is a lot better. plus the music is comfy, the prerendered backgrounds are nice, and the story is actually really good once you get the second half of the game. I can understand why some dont like it but for people like me who grew up on ps1 rpgs its comfy core, probably the closest attempt at recreating the ps1 ff magic.

Started off as the buggiest version but they actually fixed it up to run better than it did on PS1, no more game crashes at the end of specific boss fights if you used dragoon forms.

About duckstation I don't know I'm not an expert in emulation but in case only with the Jap version you can try it if a patch/hack doesn't come out to re-enable it in other versions.
