The number of games with MSAA on here really blow me away. I'm playing Psychonauts and the game is already running in the full 720x480 mode instead of a narrower res but the game still slaps on at least 2x, maybe 4x MSAA. Such a clean picture.

It was a powerful console at the time, better than the desktop PC's most people had.

It's pretty bitchin'.
I played through The Warriors on Xbox recently. Was surprised when the game booted at 720p. Doesn't seem like Rockstar playtested the game at 720p though, because it kept crashing when trying to play video files unless I dropped the resolution back down to 480p.

I feel like the OG Xbox was under-utilized. It was the strongest of the 6th consoles. Some games even did 720P. It lacked third-party support here and there though, it could have had a lot of games that the PS2 had.

Pick from popular first party exclusives you haven't played yet. Games like Mech Assault, Carve, Bloodwake, Crimson Skies, Amped 2, Project Gotham 2, these games kind of get lost in the mess of exclusives that generation but they are incredibly high quality. Mech Assault is incredible. Amped 2 may have the best scoring system in an arcade sports game ever, and Crimson Skies is dripping with style in is aesthetics and gameplay.

it literally was a neutered/modified PC, with kinda contemporary innards desu.
The CPU was a mix between a proper P3 and a Celeron, the GPU was a basic GF3 with some adds, which is the real star here, 64MB Ram was ok for the time.
I'd really lile to know how expensive the Xbox was for MS. They must have subsidised it massively.

64 MB was too low. A lot of games had really low-quality textures. KotOR even had a texture patch (several gigs, which, at the time, was a lot), since the PC version was a direct port of the XBox one.
They should've gone AMD Athlon/ATI Radeon 8500, it would've made enough room in the bill of materials for an extra 64 MB.

Microsoft wanted to give jobs to American companies and workers. That's why they went with Intel and Nvidia first. But they didn't anticipate how greedy Intel and Nvidia were. Especially Nvidia.

That's why every console company mostly uses AMD CPUs and gpus (formerly ATI groahics). AMD is willing to make affordable chips and work with console manufacturers on negotiating a reasonable price.

Sadly this is also why we never got an Xbox slim. Nvidia refused to renegotiate prices which gave the Xbox team a push to get the 360 out in 2005. Still these customs sure are nice.

Oh yeah it's a monster. When games like Wreckless were coming out on PS2 and GC it became a tradition to compare to the Xbox version to see how far ahead it is. Almost every Tony Hawk game ran at 1280x720p60 while the other consoles maxed at 480p60. The grass in THPS2X completely knocked the Dreamcast version straight back into last gen.

Both Intel and Nvidia outright refused to do any die-shrink miniaturization work, which was even worse than the price grift.
I can bet AMD/ATI would've been much more pliant to such a request.
A hypothetical 128 MB RAM Xbox would've been almost equal to the average gaming PC of the time in terms of visuals, while being very price-competitive.

64MB was fine for a console, in general. The GF3 had capabilities that made it sensible to give the Box more RAM, but MS was already bleeding money with that hardware design.

You people need to stop complaining.

Don't you realize that consoles are basically a hardware compromise and hardware "balancing act" to keep the price down?

64mb ram for original Xbox was just fine for that generation of gaming.

You can't have the best in all categories AND keep the price under $300.

Something must be compromised.

I was in high school in Australia when the Xbox released here in 2002 and I literally did not even know it existed. I don't think I even saw one in-person until 2017 when I bought one second-hand and learned how to softmod it. PS2 and PC gaming just dominated so hard in the early 2000s that I didn't even know Xbox was a thing.
