I enjoy the slower pace the series offers, and outside of the last floor I think the level design in King's Field 1 is actually pretty good for what it's trying to achieve. I also really like the shop theme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wKROrHDNx4

I really like it. It feels like a follow up to the first Zelda in that it takes core elements from rpgs and streamlines them into an action romp. Looking at its contemporaries, I think the gameplay loop most closely resembles the modern action rpg eg skyrim. In that respect it is still sort of under appreciated for the level of player immersion they were going for.
I think the authentic experience is original hardware, but its maybe a little more fun overall on duckstation with speed hacks to fix the slowdown and mapping controls to analog sticks.

only played the second game since it was released in america. one of the first ps1 games i owned. never got far in it but i loved the dreary atmosphere. ive meant to revisit it but every time i try i get annoyed by the controls. any mods to make them play more like modern From games?

I like King's Field a lot but it definitely does not mog UU and Daggerfall. At most I'd say they're equal for having good points in different ways.

it peaked imo with the PS2 games, Lost City was incredibly atmospheric

Still wild to think KF1 came out merely two weeks after the PlayStation's release, more than nine months before the West got it.

I'm a pcfag and I think this just looks retarded. The game was obviously not designed for this amount of free look. It would absolutely trivialize all of the combat. Basically cheating. You didn't beat the game if you used a mouse injector for King's Field.

it's honestly my favorite fromsoft title. i first really played it last fall, and i've beaten it three times so far. i've not even gotten close to beating dark souls, i always petre out after ringing the first bell.

They weren't even talking about it until way after Dark Souls. I was around on /v/ when Dark Souls 1 was picking up popularity. Before it even had a PC port. Absolutely nobody was talking about King's Field. This didn't become a thing until all these secondaries started to play it years after. Probably took Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 for people to finally catch on.

Unlike the secondaries, I will admit I have not played King's Field. I also think these games look alright but clearly slow paced and I can see why they were so overlooked. They clearly look as niche as they were.

From as a company wasn't on people's radar at all until they hit it big with the Souls formula. Now they are about as mainstream as you can get without being literally just Activision or Rockstar.

i admire its simplicity. also pretty cool i think it has no loading screens except for the initial one that loads you into the game. music is pretty catchy too. them little ghosties that just hover around and giggle are some of my favorite enemies. even if some of them will casually push you into a death pit.

oh yeah, also the game is pretty replayable. i've gotten pretty efficient at collecting dragon fruit whenever i do, so i at least respawn at the fountain if i die. speaking of, any translators out there know if they're called dragon fruits in all the games in japan? every king's field that was officially translated calls them dragon crystals.

I don't like KF1 all that much if at all. But I didn't play it till after the rest so that's probably a large piece of my distaste. But uh the music is as good as the rest of the series. There's that.

It's very impressive for a company's first 3D game that was also a launch title. Certain people shriek and handwring about this fact in particular for some reason.

Honestly, no. The first one is the easiest and it's also pretty short. 2 is confusing as fuck and 3 is like 3D Zelda in terms of scale, it's long. 4 is easy to get lost in as well and it's also as long as 3 but I'd still say that it's somewhat accessible to a newcomer. Also keep in mind that literally all of those games are only challenging during the first few hours so basically >>11837157 is right

It's a pretty good tech demo.
KF2 is the best metroidvania in the series, and KF3 is the best game overall.
Never played the one on PS2 though, so take that with a grain of salt, it could be better than the PS1 games for all I know.

shadow tower is not an exact sequel but it's a little easier imo. try that, impeccable atmosphere too.
i had to make maps to get around some of these games (shadow tower was very confusing especially for point of interests and shortcuts, but not kf4 for example). i love making maps because i love dungeon crawlers and i think it adds a lot to the immersion but i understand if it's not a thing for people.
