I bought a Gamecube when I was 16 or 17 in order to play Windwaker. But part of that also because I was a lifelong nintendork up until that point (Nes, gameboy, SNES, N64).

Not that it matters because they make billions anyways, but I think the better question would be how many customers did Nintendo lose because of the Wii. The Wii sold as much as it did because of soccer moms, grandmas, and literal toddlers, none of whom had any interest in Nintendo games pre-2006.

The ultra-casual demographic that the Wii attracted moved entirely to smartphone gaming by about 2010-2012ish. This is why the Wii U was such a colossal failure. Nintendo tried to double-down on the Wii strategy, but it didn't work, because that market just wasn't there anymore. None of those Wii sales produced new long-term Nintendo fans. Those people didn't want traditional gaming consoles anymore after they got bored of the Wii.

Effectively with the Wii, Nintendo traded their long-term customerbase for a new and much more fickle one. It was the "We want the modern audience" meme done 10-15 years before it became a trend. They DID win back a lot of the pre-2006 audience with the Switch, but it took a fuck of a lot of hard work and some 11/10 games like BOTW and Mario Odyssey.

None of those sales mattered because they were mostly sales made to ultra-casuals with no long-term interest in Nintendo nor in console gaming in general.

The Wii was not a sustainable system, thus the massive drop-off in sales when the Wii U (which was literally just a Wii 2) released.

Going for a GameCube 2 instead of a Wii would've resulted in less overall sales, but the sales would've been made almost entirely to people with a serious interest in Nintendo and given them a better platform to build on for the future.

What people should be mentioning in this thread is the Space World 2000 tech demo. Yes, it was a tech demo. No, it was never claimed in any credible magazines that it was the future of Zelda on Nintendo 128 or Dolphin or whatever we were calling it at the time.

this should never, ever have been shown publicly. If it needed to be presented, photos of this should not have been provided to journos. It simply gave fans of the series very high expectations that Wind Waker and its visual style simply dropped a coil of shit upon. I would’ve gotten a GameCube no matter what if those graphics from spaceworld were used and it was a continuation and finale of the start of the 64 trilogy. Instead as a life long Zelda fan playing the og at 6 after just watching my brother and copying him to MM and in an instant I dropped Zelda and Nintendo and pretty much never looked back. I think Mario and even donkey Kong are light hearted 2d side scroller/platformers. While Zelda wasn’t dark and edgy it still had some weight to it. Lttp has a land that has been totally ravaged and destroyed by Ganon. Zelda has a lot more lore/ fantasy elements and wasn’t ever perceived as kiddy (like how Batman Animated series was made for kids but wasn’t kiddy) until WW so I think, in my opinion, people were not down for that especially as anon said earlier in light of showing off the spaceworld 2000 video. I wish Wind Waker got a follow-up like Majora's Mask for Ocarina of Time (not just a sequel, but re-using the engine/assets). I found Wind Waker a lot of fun to play as a kid, with things like combat and seafaring actually feeling and looking really good even if they weren't that challenging or deep. Making a much tighter game out of those fundamentals would have been cool, and setting sail with a band of pirates would have been a perfect opening for it (which of course did lead to a sequel, but on the DS).

No, that was you, like >>11843703 said. An art style is more than just a shading technique. Two games can both be cel shaded and still have radically different art styles. Wind Waker looks nothing like Killer7, for example, their art styles are completely different despite both using cel shading.

I was more let down in how incomplete the game felt after getting real hyped up for what I was expecting to be on par with OoT and MM. I am pretty sure this was my first disappointment with the franchise, though I liked the first half of it.

I would say OoT is a good compromise and I would dare say, across all forms of media, it is up there as far as the realm of what vidya has produced as being one of the "coming of age", or classic adventure stories for a young boy to enjoy. The fact that you do start out as a kid, but then grow up into a man, was very cool, and the plot was still simple enough to essentially be "save the world" and not get too bogged down by many other non important story characters or plot threads.

I remember I wanted a sequel with an adult/teen WW Link returning to a de-flooded Hyrule and was essentially setting up Hyrule from the NES games where it appeared as a mostly barren wasteland after a great flood, except I also imagined it had steampunk/Mad Max elements and you could drive some kind of dune buggy contraption around and fight Moblins also driving similar crazy vehicles. Its kind of funny how Tears of the Kingdom captured some aspects of that concept.
