Just beat it despite a few troublesome glitches on Popstarter.
Fantastic melodrama I love the all the twists and personal turmoil that the characters go through. The narrative rings surprisingly familiar politically in 2025, especially with one of the main bads resembling donald trump and being the tool of an accelerationist madman who wants to destroy the country out of anger

Unique animations and sound effects were icing on the cake, some really funny battle cries and emotes. Completely unique art style too

>saturn exclusive
Damn, I did find the game a bit on the easy side especially if you exploit the exp bonus from using items/spells on high level characters

Btw anyone else hate the Monk class? Sorcerers and Bishops are just too strong to pass up and the Monk spells are mostly pointless and expensive MP-wise.
Swordsmen are a bit weak compared to Guardsmen but its nice to have a a medium power highly mobile character especially when Guardsmen class up to Dragoons and lose movement range

>Damn, I did find the game a bit on the easy side especially if you exploit the exp bonus from using items/spells on high level characters

Reason I'm asking is because I've only found one person talking about it online and since it's plebbit I'd rather get a second opinion. The person claims the hard mode is impossible without insane grinding (and note that the Saturn version take out the cheapiest/easiest way to grind by using items in Trials before pulling out and doing it again; so you're left with the only grinding possibility being the magic healing zones in a couple of levels and let enemies heal, as far as I understand) but at the same time he says enemies usually have 5 more levels than on normal mode so that doesn't sound that extreme.

>Btw anyone else hate the Monk class? Sorcerers and Bishops are just too strong to pass up and the Monk spells are mostly pointless and expensive MP-wise.

I had one monk and I liked it. However the Saturn version adds some spells for some classes including Monks so I'm not sure if I made use of it (I know the Hero's bird spell is Saturn addition and that's super useful), iirc it was the Monk which had that expensive spell that made anyone immune to physical damage for one hit and I used that quite a bit to set up bait. The circle healing was good too.

>Swordsmen are a bit weak compared to Guardsmen but its nice to have a a medium power highly mobile character especially when Guardsmen class up to Dragoons and lose movement range

I only had one Guardsmen and 2 swordman and I thought the Guardsmen was VERY strong too, however its low movement range combined to his weakness to spells made him deadweight/left behind in several missions. He was usually 2-3 levels lower than my Swordsmen though he didn't exactly need those extra levels. According to gamefaqs the most OP team is to go with 3 Swordmen and 0 Guardsmen and I believe it.

Wish someone would just port the updated script from the Saturn fan-tl into the original.

>>11833987
Honestly, given the port was handled by KCE Nagoya, it wouldn't surprise me if Hard mode was half-baked.

They are pretty squishy though. I like having two guardsmen because you can form a blockade to protect your casters and archers and put mystic shield on them, then have a couple hawknights running around grabbing items and activating switches

The Saturn version has a few new items and spells, and if you play with the fan translation you get 240p vertical res like on PSX.
Only drawback is that items/equipment no longer have visual icons, and also sprite scaling doesn't seem to look as good as on PSX.
(Saturn also has exclusive hard mode and new maps if you manage to beat that but you do not want to try that on a first playthrough)

Saturn version also allows 2 in-battle saves (internal memory and RAM cart) if you're interested in exploiting the shit out of that, if not that can easily be ignored

Liberals are absolutely convinced that society can't function with brown people doing menial labor. It never occured to them that western society was doing just fine before rajesh and pablo showed up willing to do shitty, accountability-less work for half the pay. It's funny that one of the main things they soapbox about is fair wages when having illegal aliens in the country is what drives employers not to pay people a living wage.

I love the character design and art for this game, you won't find them anywhere else. In fact a lot of early SRPG's like Shining Force, FFT, and the box art for Ogre Battle had unique art styles you didn't see in other RPG's

It does this thing where skills are tied to equipment so you're just grinding out skills from a weapon so you can then toss it out. I hate that system. I think tactics advance did that too, drove me crazy. Some people like it though, so lucky them I suppose.

>It does this thing where skills are tied to equipment so you're just grinding out skills from a weapon so you can then toss it out.
I mean they work as standard weapons. Once there is a new one no reason to stick with it just like the first game. Except for the daggers since some daggers give +1 mov so say the Joule gives you the act again skill which you can pass to other daggers but since they dont give +1 move you have to decide wether the damage tradeoff is worth it. Which personally think it doesnt since Joule also has more skillslots.
Anyways I prefer its gameplay to 1 since most classes not magical only have single attack and magic progression is kinda fucked since you get Phase Shift at which point you are waiting for Salamander.
VH 2 is constantly giving you skills with each weapon so it feels more rewarding progression

It's a silly pet peeve of mine. Never liked the system and I'll drop a game if it has it or something like it. Someday I'll probably try again, I would like to believe there is more then one good Vandal Hearts game. And maybe the story really picks up steam after the first hour or two but that's as far as I ever got with the sequel. Never touched that one I saw that came out on PSN or PS3 or whatever digitally.

Why didnt you like it? I absolutely loved the first few hours.
Playing as country bumpking kids looking up to the swordman as the protag soon realizes there is no justice for peasants and wanting to be more than that really hooked me.
The game really grabbed me from start to end but its maybe because I didn't grew with 1 that the sequel being completely different from didn't jarred me as much.
One thing thats very weak is that characters other than the protag, his love interest, the old man and Nicola dont get much development.
I like how in 1 everyone has some demons that they grow from.

I don't even really recall. I just remember it was a large wall for me to climb when I tried the game out cause it had so many things about it that pushed me back. Like the skills system, the art, the simultanious turn thing. Most of it rubbed me the wrong way in those first hours so I got off the Vandal Hearts 2 train at the next stop. This was forever ago though. So another attempt is probably in order.

I think they kept the insane blood spurts if I remember correctly from the first game. So well done there VH2.

Blocking paths can cause enemies to loop around the entire map trying to approach you from the other side, this can be exploited in that specific mission where you are supposed to run away to trick the enemies into spreading out and thus diluting their attack power
