What emulation do you consider, for your personal usecase, 'Solved'?

I'm asking: Imagine you didn't already have the actual real hardware. If you wanted to play a bunch of games for said console/handheld, for which console/handheld would you not just use the emulator because you think the emulator isnt accurate enough or too buggy, and you would buy the hardware + accessories for it.

I still feel like I need to own a DS, 3DS and WiiU for the dualscreen and touchscreen stuff.
I have a Vita because Vita3K sucks ass, 360 because Xenia can still be pretty buggy and I just wanna enjoy the game and not have to redo part of the game because it crashed before I could save.

But for N64? Buy both an expansive everdrive and an N64 in 2025? When Ares with the ParaLLEl renderer are 99% of the way there? I wouldn't.

When using Duckstation, Dolphin, PPSSPP, I don't expect to encounter any bugs that would bother me enough to buy a real hardware for them. Or any bugs that would make me wish I was playing on real hardware.

PCSX2 for PS2 i know still has issues. I guess i'm glad that I have a real PS2 still that I could technically fall back on, but I doubt I would have to actually hook it up anytime. When the soft-float PR gets merged, all those racing games will be fixed too.
So would I buy a PS2 if I didnt already have one? I don't think I would. atleast I dont think if I did i would ever use it.

How is the current state of emulating 6th and 7th gen consoles?

I know Dolphin has pretty much perfected GameCube and Wii emulation. PCSX2, I believe, can run most of the PS2 library just fine, without the major issues that often come with emulating games.

But what about the original Xbox? Can Xemu or Cxbx-Reloaded run most of the console-exclusive titles that people are interested in? And what about Xenia? Between Ryujinx and Yuzu, which one currently has better compatibility for Switch exclusives?

If there are no graphical inaccuracies/glitches and no audio stuttering I say its good to go. Playing at native res helps avoid those plus just looks better imo. Unless its causing real tangible issues cycle accuracy is cool but unnecessary for me.

For me N64 is still a fucking issue. Even with a top of the line PC I still get slowdown and audio stuttering out the ass and there are still games with visual issues too even with ParaLLEl. I still can't get Conker to work without poor performance and/or audio issues after all these years.

Also for as much as everyone sucks Dolphins cock I find it's performance to be pretty lackluster and a lot of games that aren't first party titles really don't do so well. It's a lot better with the update that released a few weeks ago though that includes better frame pacing and audio so maybe that's finally been solved too. I wish they would just optimize the software renderer so I didn't have to tinker with settings on a game by game basis to fix graphical and performance issues.

>>11836278
I have the entire PS2 library downloaded and haven't personally had a single issue with any game I've played. Not that I've played anywhere close to everything but using the software renderer everything Just Works for me. Try it if you haven't. Make sure you're on the latest nightly builds too.

PCSX2 is great. In software mode 99% of games play and look as they should if you don't mind playing at the original resolution.

Xemu still has a long road ahead before it's at that level but the progress being made is extremely impressive and a lot of games are playable with minor or even no issues. Given that OG Xbox emulation was completely unheard of and thought to be impossible as far back as a few years ago, the state it's in now is really admirable.

Like >>11836343 said, Dolphin really isn't as perfect as people let on. It has some good qualities but pound for pound its dated and is being outdone by pretty much every modern emulator. If you play it with the default settings you're going to have a really bad time lol even the big name games don't work like they should out of the box. I feel like the constant praise of it being perfect has led to it's stagnation.

Real hardware and games are too expensive and I prefer the convenience of playing on PC. I used to have a massive collection, several CRTs and a combination of games, flashcarts and ODEs, and swore by real hardware for the longest time but at a certain point I was tinkering more than I was actually playing. Despite my few complaints, emulation is pretty much all the way there for most systems now and I much prefer it. There is still some tinkering involved with emulation but most emulators once you dial in the settings that are right for you, you're done. I'm sure the few issues that are still hanging around will be solved soon given all the recent advancements and bigger community support. Honestly even if retro prices tanked and became affordable, I'm not sure if I would even go back.

portables i can't quite feel right about. no one made a emu machine or phone/tablet that mimics NDS and 3DS almost-perfectly
emulating GBA games on phones/tablets was mostly okayish. but touchscreen controls never worked well with shooters for me.

Lower latency too.

No one should ever go from analog to digital because there's always a high latency tax.

Either go full analog - console to crt - or full digital - emulation to gaming monitor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't one way of determining if a console is being perfectly emulated be to see if it is allowed when speedrunning? Those guys have autism coming out of their ears, and from how I understand it, they never allow emulated games on their speedrun rankings unless the emulating is flawless.

nta but mednafen is pretty much flawless on ps1, but i also play on ps3 for the analog output (and also because i separated emulators from my main rig besides some very light stuff, because emulators today require an insane amount of dependencies, but mednafen is pretty light on that).
it's also convenient because on a ps3 cfw i can play all the playstation library up to ps3 and there's emulators for other things as well.
the only thing mednafen does wrong with ps1 is a slightly different aspect ratio but that can be easily fixed on the config files
