Never used one because I stick with original hardware, but this seems like a really really good patch over the problem of original hardware dying out or becoming scarce. In my opinion it would be superior in every significant way to my own scheme of sticking with original hardware if not for features of the human mind that should probably all be considered serious flaws - for example, the tendency to have difficulty choosing and then sticking to one nice thing when a giant menu of ALL the nice things is available, or the tendency to become sentimentally attached to stupid old pieces of incidental packaging that surround genuinely valuable things. If I were to somehow lose my whole cartridge collection but NOT any of my hardware that the cartridges were supposed to plug into, then I wouldn't buy all new cartridges, but would instead switch to flashcarts.
Anonymous No.11837230 [Report]
>>11837223
Oh and some of the same goes for emulation of course - but not all of it, since emulation, unlike the use of a high-quality flashcart, DOES tend to significantly change the actual experience of playing a game sometimes, usually for the worse (even if only slightly), so preferring original hardware to it isn't as obviously silly as it is with flashcarts. But still, in the long run something like emulation is obviously superior to any other option, since software theoretically never dies whereas hardware always does. Eventually.

How is the N8 Pro? I'm looking at getting an NES flash cart and I don't really care about most features beyond being able to play games (including patched roms for translations) and a single save state per game. Is the N8 Pro overkill? Are there better, cheaper flashcarts that'd serve me well?

>but this seems like a really really good patch over the problem of original hardware dying out or becoming scarce
How? You still need the original hardware to be in working condition to use a flashcart. If you was arguing ODEs I would at least see some point since the optical drive is very likely to be the first component to fail or start to have problems, but for cartridge-based systems this is not an issue.

Is this true that flashcarts use incorrect voltage which may damage the console over time, or is this fear mongering?
Anonymous No.11838205 [Report]
>>11838190
Older ones didn't have proper voltage regulation, and many bootleg/cheap ones still don't. Whether it might damage your console is still argued, the original article was a bit dramatic about it, but it is a concern that shouldn't just be ignored.

A lot of older such electronics ran on 5 volts, around the mid-90s they started switching to a 3.3v standard that is still mostly the standard today. It's hard to get 5v stuff nowadays, especially if you are putting something current like a modern CPU, flashROM, or FPGA chip in a cart where 5V options very likely don't even exist for those components, so you have to put components that are designed to take 3.3volts on a cartridge where the system will be supplying them with 5 volts. Anything decently made will have voltage regulators to convert the voltage between 5/3.3 across the components.

Even the MiSTer is susceptible to this, the SNAC port is meant to let you plug in original accessories (generally controllers) in a port that is directly wired to the FPGA so natively connect the controllers to it. Problem is the FPGA runs at 3.3V, so a level shifter is recommended. This is not needed for the N64 and PS1 adapters (And I think GBA) since those systems ran at 3.3v, but is needed for pretty much everything else.

in a perfect world the only people shelling out for flash carts would be homebrew devs, and game companies would respond to the demand and reissue games in their original format.
But we have stupid speculative hype-based world that inflated prices to such a degree that it's not viable to buy old games on real hardware and flash carts, even with some of them costing hundreds of dollars, are more affordable
so yeah, fuck collectors, fuck WATA, fuck e-celebs with walls of games they'll never touch.

I have an N8 Pro Fami. It works great. I have no complaints with it. The Regular N8 isn't in production anymore, so the only way to get one is to buy a bootleg.

As far as the differences between the two models goes, you can read about them in detail here: https://nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com/2020/05/the-everdrive-n8-pro-second-time.html
Menu navigation and ROM loading is faster on the pro. The pro has more accurate sounding expansion audio, and unlike the original, it lets you adjust the levels of each expansion audio channel to counteract differences between hardware revisions. The only way to handle disk swapping in FDS games in the standard model is through the built in auto-swapper. This works for most games, but in rare cases fails which causes compatibility problems with some FDS games. The pro model gives you the option to control disk swapping manually with a button on the cartridge, circumventing this issue.

The pro has a slightly larger library of supported games. It supports 61 more mappers than the original, but most of these are only used by pirate carts and not unique games. There are some homrbrew games which are affected by the mapper support, however. To see what mappers are not support on each model, see:
https://www.nesdev.org/wiki/Everdrive_N8 and
https://www.nesdev.org/wiki/Everdrive_N8_Pro
Most of the difference in library support comes from the maximum ROM size. The standard model only supports up to 512 KB of PRG memory and 512 KB of CHR memory, while the pro supports 8 MB of each. This doesn't affect any officially licensed games, but it does affect some unofficial releases and ROM hacks. Most significantly, Action 52 and the Metal Slader Glory fan translation only work on the pro model.

It's not a heat issue, you are putting 5 volts into 3.3 volt components. Sending 35% more voltage than they are designed for is not great for sensitive electronics regardless of heat.

I've been a collectorfag forever but after getting a Saturn fenrir and a Summercart64 (primarily for translations / hacks) I just want one for all the hardware I have, now. The prices for the 'good' carts seem insane but it kind of makes sense for how much you can possibly get out of them, and how much you'd likely save on buying actual carts.

I had the idea that if I started buying flashcarts I'd sell my games but that still hasn't happened

My ancient V2.5 had extra large cuttouts on the cart to fit US and Jap systems. But Like other anon said, get a Summercart (Summercart has is made like that too, and even if your specific one isn't, Phantom Mod Team sells just the cartridge for their version for like, $10). You can play the F-Zero X 64DD Engrish patch and save your custom tracks/racers. It's cheaper too, even if you buy the "official" version at $100, it's better than the X7.

There is a patch that lets you play it on a normal everdrive, so you can play the new Cups, but you can't save custom tracks like the real game. The Summercart has an FPGA that emulates the 64DD so it works like it's supposed to. It's bretty neat.
