What games have suffered the most ruthless re-evaluations compared to when they were originally released?

I remember this getting perfect scores all over the place at the time, but nowadays it seems almost universally reviled.

>ruthless
That's entirely the wrong word to describe something that tends to involve no real insight or ultimately amount to much beyond a very specific target audience.

I was there. I got the game for Christmas the year it came out. It fucking sucked. The fact it got good scores (though not as high as you imply) really discredited a lot of game mags in my eye. I have no idea why people defend this game.

Adults were writing glowing reviews back then. Something changed and might just be a generational thing, like how point and click adventure games used to be really popular but are now panned for their "moon logic" with today's audiences not wanting anything to do with them.

I think it’s funny that this site is so inherently distrustful of game journos in general…they’re all SHILLS…until they give a good score to your pet game then it becomes undeniable proof that a piece of shit like DK 64 is “actually good”

We've been over this many times. By Rare's own admission DK64 was designed with a "quantity over quality" philosophy, with the reasoning that kids back then could only afford to buy a few games and so with this they'd have something that lasted them months. That shit doesn't fly in the current year when everyone one has thousands of games at their fingertips at all times and can definitely find something more fun and immediately satisfying to play.

That's pretty damning if true. Cynical way to design a game.

Nintendo game reviews were always bullshit, they've been buying of "video game journalists" since the early 90's. Remember Nintendo power? No matter how shit the game was they said it was good, they even gave Superman 64 a good review.

Sounds similar to how Disney buys good reviews from movie critics. The Lion King was a ripoff of Kimba, stripped down of anything interesting, and critics acted like it was some amazing revelation.

I think a large contributing factor is emulation. The game relies heavily on framerate slowdowns for stuff, but PC's these days are just so powerful that the FPS stays consistently high, and it causes the game to be ridiculously difficult out of nowhere. I think people are very "nose blind" to this sort of thing, and are quick to chalk the game up to being really bad. picrel there's still people who love the game despite quirks

Did people like the original games a lot? I remember liking the imagery, but not really wanting to play the games much. You can see that's really common now, but I thought it I was fairly representative back then too. Opposite of mario nes which was just damn fun gameplay and i didn't give a fuck what the worlds were supposed to be or about the 'characters'

Which is exactly why the reviews are so obvious upon reading them now, in how deluded (or deceptive) they are. These teenagers who got flow out free to Las Vegas or some shit to play it for 1.5 hours are blowing their loads on the page about it. "The Sonic Was Never Good Era" was really stupid and foolish and a lot of the criticism simply came from people who were terrible at video games or biased tendies that had a bone to pick with Sonic.

I think its a great game, and it's funny to me that people think it's too big and has too many collectibles but then will say they like Banjo Tooie which is like 5 times as big. I genuinely think most people that talk shit about it haven't played it, which is too bad since I think its one of the better games on N64.

I hope it gets a PC port soon like other N64 games have been getting, it would be great to play it at a better framerate.

There was a Castlevania poll in 2015 on /vr/, and IV came out 2nd place, after SOTN.
No matter how much 1 or 2 guys try to force their shit in, liking IV is not controversial here.
As for Castlevania fans in general, IV came out number 1 on CV Dungeon forums poll.

I don't have the image on hand but there's a compilation of reviews from magazines around the World that gave glowing reviews of Sonic 1-3&K. As well as it's high ratings for both of it's early cartoons and the high sales of the Archie Comic. Sonic was respected at the time and it was only when Youtube started that the California Rich Family Circle (JonTron, Egoraptor, Jesse Cox, etc) & the Web 2.0 Journalists started that they were able to influence change on perspective to get clicks by igniting anger. We're still seeing their influence today because they were big at a key point of time in internet culture.
And anecdotally, Sonic was respected and appreciated by the average gamer. Sure there was a rivalry but any Nintendo die hard I met always appreciated the Sonic games for their creativity and solid gameplay.

I like Sonic, but there is a very legitimate point to be made about Sonic being fundamentally flawed. Every one of those games has at least one bad level, and pre-widescreen hacks, you really didn't have the screen space you needed.
I think even the developers were conscious of this, since they give you the ring health system, which is like the most forgiving health system in a platformer. Which also probably accounts for some of Sonic's popularity, since anyone can just stumble through those games, regardless of being hit every ten seconds.
