am I the only one whos favorite mario is still the first one? the controls are just tight and satisfying more so than the other 2d games. something about the momentum just feels better here. I find the music and graphics still very appealing. and most importantly its actually really difficult and satisfying to get all the way through it. assuming you are playing as intended (no continue code, no warps, no life cheesing) it makes for a tense and challenging run where you really want to grab every last coin you can because youll need that extra life. no other mario game replicates this, except for LL but we all know that game is shit. yeah 3 has better graphics, better level design and music, more powerups, but idk it doesnt feel as tight and satisfying and its way more of a slog to play through.

I don't find myself cutting it today close and usually the effort of collecting extra coins puts me at greater risk than just ignoring them.

I've come around to this opinion too. The increased verticality starting with SMB 2 led to more diverse level design, but I think it also makes the levels more spaced out and empty feeling. Having less control over your in air momentum also makes the game feel more tense, for better and worse. I personally enjoy it, but I can see why they axed it in later games as it doesn't really lend itself to exploring.
That being said, I feel like the land games don't get enough love in these 2D Mario discussions. The physics might not be as snappy as the console games, but the bizarre level themes do a lot to sell them. What other games allow you to ride a bubble to outer space?

It is really good. I like it more than SMB3. It has a simpler, cleaner look and doesn't try to go crazy on gimmicks.

the gameplay mechanics are incredibly refined for such an early 2d platformer.

Yep, it was the best by far. Great level design, pacing, pick up and play appeal, perfect difficulty curve, timeless artstyle.

SMB3 is ugly and garish, with constant gimmicks, haphazard level design, and time-wasting minigames.

It's the purest platformer in the series with zero fat. A pick up and play any time type of game and my favorite in the series. Also has the most prestigious speed run category in all of gaming

I don't think it's a very good execution of the live based gameover format. extra lives are so scarce that they might as well be irrelevant and the game's challenge almost completely comes down to an rng gate in the penultimate level, you're going to be playing the entire game several times just to roll the dice with the hammer bros.
t. beat it without warps.

No, it's my favorite too. Specifically my favorite version is VS. Super Mario Bros. How I wish Nintendo had made an arcade version of SMB2j.

A good player can arrive at 8-4 with over 15 lives just playing naturally.

Completing it (without warps or cheats) felt incredibly satisfying, definitely a top 10 gaming moment for me. I still prefer SMB3 though, more iconic, more diverse, and the 4th wall breaking with how the world is a stage is core to the whole Mario experience for me. Like the game knows it's just a game and is telling you this in a not very subtle way, I love that sense of humor.

Yes Anon, out of the over 8 billion people in he world you and you alone are the only one whose favorite Mario game is the first one.

Not to mention Super Mario Bros isn't even the first Mario game

Just use continue code, almost everyone did back then. Literally all you do is hold A when continuing, it's far from a cheat code

You're not the only one, I could never get into subsequent ones. Except NSMB on the DS.

Played through it this morning. Mario controls extremely well. There's a lot of subtle tweaks you can do with the momentum as well as ducking and sliding. Lost Levels is even more satisfying once you're good at it.

It's the only one I've completed. Others have a very gay, kiddie feel to them, makes me uncomfortable.

>Stages redone to be harder
>Power-ups are rarer
>Extra lives are almost impossible to find; 200 coins earns a 1-Up
>The clock runs faster (I think)
Basically, they rigged it to suck more quarters out of you.
