The game is just a bunch of PNG's with very basic 3D models over them. Why wouldn't it be able to?

I don't think the Saturn could handle the fluid transition CG cutscene/gameplay like the PS1

The in-game movie transitions with the models overlaid probably would have been too much for the Saturn. The PS1 had built-in support for video decoding.

Maybe a Saturn with an MPEG card could do it but I have no idea how that interacts with the Saturn's native graphics so maybe still not possible.

FF7 does that? I can't recall. Anyway, just replace that by a full on FMV.

Rip out the awful 3D and replace it with nice 2D graphics, and yes it would have done excellently

In some ways it feels like a 486 should be able to run it if it was ported well. The characters might have a lot of polygons but even 5 on screen should be nowhere near as much an area of Sega Rally.
You needed a really good computer to run it because the game displays backgrounds using flat polygons which is not really efficient for a pc of the time.
Deep fear actually has much better graphics but it was later and an early version of Heart of Darkness was shown.

it'd be a bit lower quality unless really uncompressed on the cd, also the transparencies possibly

So the game's intro where they seamlessly transition from the train CG to gameplay wouldn't be possible on Saturn?

>FF7 does that?
Several times. The intro sequence, shortly after naming Cloud where the view pans up, the explosion after escaping the reactor, the air buster exploding, the elevators in junon, FF7 made extensive use of it.

Damn for some reasons I never realized and I thought FF8 was the first to do that. I remember they did make a big deal of it in the FF8 marketing like with the Dollet beach landing sequence so I guess I've been a victim of marketing for 26 years
