He's a dumb frat boy who plays soccer in party city, then he gets transported to a shitty future where everyone's constantly living in the shadow of an apocalypse monster and has to team up with a group escorting a girl to her death. He's from such a different setting that he's unable to ever read the room and annoys the shit out of everyone (except the girl, who likes the fact that he's the only person who will be upfront with her, while everyone else is preemptively mourning her suicide).

I thought so too back in '02 or so. Now VIII basically the only game of any kind I ever want to play at all.
I agree X is where the series died, still a great game with more secrets than I had originally realized but the voice acting and hallways were the beginning of the end.

I'm conflicted about XII. I'm playing the remastered version of it right now and on the one hand, it's kind of amazing. Great worldbuilding, excellent music, lots of tiny little details like NPCs constantly having new shit to say after major events. And it's deep as fuck. Shitloads of weapons and equipment, 40+ clan hunts, 30 trophy hunts, 80 rare monsters, a ton of sidequests....there is a *lot* of content here and most of it is good.

But at the same time, I'm not sure I've ever played a JRPG with such overt contempt for the player's time. The drop rates and spawn rates for some of the crafting items and rare monsters are unconscionable, especially considering how slow the game is in general. Things only respawning if you move one or usually two areas over is such a fucking time sink and it results in you having to do the stupid back and forth "zoning" thing inn pretty much every area of the map if you want any hope of the rarest items. You might have to unironically use the steal command 100 fucking times in a single encounter to steal rare items. You have to farm multiple copies of multiple items that have like 1% drop rates from enemies that only appear in specific circumstances. You might have to zone in and out of one area in the mines for hours to get the zodiac spear. I gave it 30 minutes and gave up. It's not even worth the grief. There are so many obtuse and arbitrary parts that would be impossible to even start without a guide. The great crystal not having a map is just an insult. Terrible decision.

And then there's fucking Yiazmat, which is just irrefutable poof that the people making this game hated the people who were going to play it. That kind of horseshit has no business in a single player RPG. Fuck off with that. I played it a 4X speed just leaving it up t the autopilot until the end and it still took more than an hour. I love 90% of this game but I actively despise the other 10%. It's randomly malicious for no good reason

I'm not even trying to do like a full blown 100% run. Like, the fucking zodiac spear is staying right where it is because I am not running up and down that damned stairway 500 times until it spawns. That OP invisible bow that can only be realistically obtained if you use multiple save files to manipulate the RNG because its normal drop rate is unironically 1 in 10,000? Yeah, fuck that. Even my autism has its limits. But fuck, man. I wanted at least *some* of the endgame items and even if you're not shooting for the moon and making the Tournesol or the Wyrmhero blade or something the crafting or bazaar requrements are kind of fucked.

Like, the Ultima Blade is maybe the 4th or 5th best greatsword. It's not insanely overpowered, it's not used in any crazy builds, it's just a decent late-game option until the A+ swords become available. And if you want to make it you need 2 adamantite, which requires a monograph and repeatedly farming an enemy whihc only appears in two places and even then in limited numbers. And two death powders, which is another mongraph drop (aka, it will eventually happen but not anytime soon) for another fairly uncommon enemy who spawns in an area that doesn't have a teleport crystal or anchor spot so you have to warp somewhere else and then travel by foot just to get there, and then you need a drop which has a 3-10% chance of dropping from one of the elemental entities, which only spawn under specific weather conditions, so you have to "zone" in and out of the area until you meet specific weather conditions to find the thing and when you do you have like a 97% chance of *not* getting what you're looking for from it.

And this is all for a sword that might be second tier at best. They gatekept stuff waaaay too fucking hard in this game. I understand not wanting to make the absolute s-tier stuff easy to get but Jesus, 9 fucking holy crystals to make the game's third-best crossbow when you also need them for white masks? It's crazy

It was probably the easiest way to cut corners at the end of development. You have to have the story sections and all the game areas where the story sections take place but if you're short on time just never making the final models for some of the unique monsters is one thing you can get away with. People will notice the lack of variety but it's not glaringly obvious that something's actually missing.

Those incredibly lame superbosses in particular reek of "we don't have time to make actual additional content so we just tweaked the stats of something that we'd already finished."
