For many consoles, SNES included, there is no objectively correct AR. I know this is a troll thread, but it bears repeating for all the zoomies to hear. As long the game looks vaguely correct most of the time and it isn't stretched into 16:9 like some Brazilian Longplay channel on YouTube, I don't care.

Your example, Super Metroid, has tiles that look incorrect in 8:7 by the way. There is no winning.

I know which AR you're talking about (often referred to as NTSC in emulators and the bottom one in pic related, with the middle one being 4:3), but the reality is that not all developers cared and some games look better with square pixels and vice versa

To be fair, I have genuinely seen something stretched that much on YouTube, and it wasn't being done as a joke. (It was a DS game and the broken person who made the video had stacked the emulated screens vertically and then stretched both of them horizontally.) MANY people are broken to the extent that they don't recognize a difference between 16:9 and 4:3. How far could their brokenness really extend? Would they casually accept this 32:9 image of Mario 3? Probably not. But what about, say, 22:9 or 26:9? You don't know where the boundary is. All we can say is that it's at least as high as 16:9, and that that is already far too high.

SNES is not 4:3. The pixel clock was derived from a whole number division of the master clock. They did not have the freedom to set it to the precise value required for 4:3 equivalent pixel aspect.

Honestly one time I saw a picture of someone playing Mega Man 7 stretched to fill a 16:9 monitor and it was eye opening because the person was at the very end of the game. More than I can say for most of the people in screenshot or CRT threads

You are ignoring overscan. The games pixels do not exactly fit onto the screen. You may be seeing a 4:3 rectangle, but if you take into account the hidden pixels, the real aspect ratio is not 4:3. Emulators typically show all the pixels, rather than cropping like the TV does, if you show all the pixels, they should not be displayed in 4:3, only the cropped region is 4:3

No, the correct ratio again is 4:3, which is the displays resolution. How the fuck is this even debatable when its the ratio that everyone, including the devs had the game running on hardware at the time?
Some artists took this in to account when making art for the system the difference of the internal resolution rendering ratio, some didn't. You just have to accept that.

Its too simplistic to focus just on squares and circles. These systems are tile based. Art in these games are typically drawn to fit exactly into tiles. This is a hardware limitation that is separate from other aspects of the art design. So you might end up with a situation where the larger objects respect proper aspect ratio, whilst smaller objects are snapped to tiles. In a effect, many games don't really have a correct aspect ratio.

They dont do that. Dumb people and kids tolerate the stretched mode because they dont know any better but if you changed the aspect ratio right in their face they would be surprised and notice. Its the same thing with FPS, people say they cant tell but all it is is them not knowing any better and not understanding whats happening.
