Could be worse. 30 years after Sonic 2 was released we finally got to glimpse some very rare prerelease material including info on cut levels, like Genocide City. Had to be posted by a 90lb Nancy boy with painted fingernails. Two weeks later Alex Yard went fucking insane. Hang in there Sonic fans that new Rovio card game looks dope.

You got a nice little video and a lot of commemorative merch and new developer retrospective interviews. What else do you want? It was a great game and still is to this day.

God can you imagine if people acted like this about films? No wonder gaming is in such a shit state when people treat it like something that needs to be endlessly dumbed down in the name of "modernisation."

At this point I'd sooner trust fans with making a decent remake/remaster/rewhatever than modern SE, but IMO it doesn't really need one. Only things that really annoy me about FF9 are the slow pace of battle, poorly implemented mechanics like Trance, and some of the things going on with plot and character development, or lack thereof.

I don't understand why you guys hate the mere thought of remaking old games. Why do you feel that way?

They could be okay as their own separate thing, obviously. They can't replace the original, but I'd still be interested to see some classics remade with improved controls and possibly restored cut content.

I don't hate remakes in principle, I just don't like what they end up looking like in practice most of the time. They're very often not handled by the creative team behind the original, and in many cases aren't even handled in-house and are outsourced to some second-rate, disinterested dev team, with mediocre results.
And while you say they can't replace the original, they very much do in some sense. Unless they completely fuck it up and make it some bug-ridden mess no one wants to touch, the remade version is often what ends up being discussed in most spaces. It becomes the de-facto version for those who weren't there for the original. Whether that's good or bad is subjective, but I am pointing out that it does happen.

>Why do you feel that way?
thats such a bizarre question. Wanting something you like replaced (remakes replace originals as far as online discourse is concerned) is such an unhinged opinion you should be the one defending it. I shouldn't have to explain to you why I dont need 99% the same experience with 1% trinket doodad addon content that will always be pointless tumor fanfiction.

Remakes as standalone games effectively have no story. They have no characters. You cant just graft an original game into a new box and pretend like you made something new. The only reason its not illegal is because its self plagiarization driven by the urge for more money. You cant rewind the clock, time is always moving forward, you cant change the original.

>They could be okay as their own separate thing, obviously.

"look at this cut content! Look at these new controls!" what does that do for me? I can get new controls from a different game theres a million of them. Is that all I get? Make me something new.

I don't hate remakes until they fuck with things they shouldn't. The second they start doing shit like censoring things for modern audiences or making changes that completely undermine what made it good in the first place, I'm out. Alternatively if it somehow looks more fucking ugly than the old version, I just lose interest.
As for why fans can't live and let live, simple comparison: Imagine your favorite song, then some talentless hack makes a pissawful cover that becomes the defacto version in most people's eyes. It's just an infuriating feeling to have something you consider art not only replaced with a subpar version, but the subpar version gets more praise when those same people would have greatly prefered the original if it was their first take. They'll never get that first playthrough experience with the superior version, so it's just kinda sad to see. Shit like the FF PR collection is a great example, especially with all the "QoL" cheats that are just built into the game.

How many people do you think played the translation patch of FF2, vs how many played DoS? PR? How many even played more than one version? You're being a pedantic little shit, but the thing that gets replaced is the exposure that a newer version gets compared to one decades old. I thought my song comparison spelled that out well enough, considering its exactly how music trending and replacement happens. How many millenials and zoomers know 99 Red Balloons but not the original song by Nena? Most of them don't even know the song was in German, let alone the actual context around it. And yes before you touch your tism, covers are the music equivalent of remakes. Its called a comparison.

Plenty of people do, saying things like "this version effectively replaces the original for me". I'm not going to say it's the majority, but enough do think this way about certain remakes. And even if they don't come out and say such things, the fact of the matter is, when most discussion centers around the remake rather than the original, it HAS been effectively replaced.

Literally nothing wrong w remakes. Especially if youโ€™re on this board youโ€™ll never let a shit remake fly and no one on this board talks w any reverence towards remakes or remasters that are shit. No one is saying how awful Warcraft 3 is, because of that farce of a remake that actually did replace the OG in your digital account, but in that case thatโ€™s your fault for not owning physical and the risk you take w digital and a separate issue. It wouldโ€™ve been awesome to get a demake remake or just a touch up w faster loading times and a little cut content added back in and if it sucked and they fucked up, well this the board that will go into every single detail on why not to touch it. If anything, in relation to this board specifically, itโ€™ll just keep ff9 in the topics and threads for a bit which is never a bad thing since ff9 is awesome despite its flaws!

Back then there was no concern for "gamification", no "maximizing engagement". They simply told a story using all the tools at their disposal, aimed at the same goal. They came directly from drama and cinema, and it showed.
These idiots nowadays with their rules and theories about what a game should be... Fucking soulless morons.

I'm glad no remake will happen. They would taint the soul of this game anyway. And I hope FFVIII doesn't get remade either.

Something. Closest we got was Dawntrail having FF9 themed content like a year ago, which they probably expanded a little over time. FF9 was considered a swansong turning point for the series in a lot of ways, and in many people's eyes it was the last "good one"
It just deserves better, especially in a world where FF7 has been getting like over a decade of attention by itself.

Once a new version comes out, who's most likely to be researching information regarding the game? People playing those new versions.

But screenshots aren't even the worst part. The worst part are balance/gameplay changes and additions thrown in and you can't even find information regarding a specific older version of the game anymore. Good fucking luck finding help on a specific version of the first Ys games. Yeah, I know, they've been remade a thousand times, but that's exactly the point, at some point the originals, and even the first REMAKES, just disappear.

Remember when wikias claimed that Necron and the Iifa Tree were the same entity, based on the misinterpretation of a single line the Tree says which sole purpose was in fact to foreshadow the return of the mist?

And then there were faggots on /v/ acting all mighty calling other retards for claiming that Necron comes out of nowhere, saying "obviously he's the Iifa Tree". Meaning they needed to read the wikia to understand the story, ate up the bullshit that was written on there, and then pretented like it was their knowledge.

You can read more about it here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/197338-final-fantasy-ix/faqs/36121 or just delve the forums to see the discussions around it. Until the Ultimania Guides were translated, there wasn't much confirmation of what Necron was so this was the best interpretation the community came up with and it was the most interesting one (even moreso when you tie FFIX's themes to it).

Necron is the husk of Chaos, who was reincarnating as the final bosses of each game to that point. His death in FF9 was the deathblow that the warriors of light started when they went back in time in 1. He's basically the death rattle that wants to take creation with him after continuously failing to take it over, which lines up with the whole thing about him representing the fear of death or whatever. I'll always go off of the connected universe theory.

Because the people who clamor for them are retards who only want their niche little interest in something old to be "relevant".

Have some goddamn courage in liking something for what it is, now matter how old or outdated it is.
>They can't replace the original
That's bullshit and you know it. Go play the original Sonic CD on a modern platform that's selling it right now. Oh wait you can't, you have buy that piece of shit Sonic Origins collection with missing voices.

Just cleared Burmecia, now I have control of Garnet and Steiner with Marcus. Sure do wish I could summon a chocobo anywhere instead of only on their tracks, I would like to take this party out fighting Mistadons. Or see what happens when I enter Dali or Lindblum with this group. Unfortunately, there's no tracks in the area I have access to, and the "Summon Chocobo Anywhere" cheat doesn't seem to function. Looks like whoever has been maintaining the cheat table hasn't updated it in over a year, so the memoria/moguri mod updates broke things. Tried downgrading to an earlier version of the mod, which made the cheat option actually enable, but it didn't actually work.
Also tried uninstalling the mod entirely and using the base Steam FF9 cheat engine table, but that failed to work too. Oddly enough, loading the save file made Marcus disappear from the team. Trying to add him back in with cheat engine gave me Eiko instead.
I don't think I'll have much more to mess around with until I reach the Outer Continent.

Can't remember for Lindblum but at the start of Disc 2 you *can* go back to Dali with Garnet's party. If you do you can buy equipment that will be useable for Zidane's party once you switch back and this equipment helps in being able to safely fight the Grand Dragons though it's far from the only ingredients required for that

On Duckstation, you can render at high resolution, then downsample back down to native so the 3D looks better without standing out like a sore thumb from the low-res 2D prerendered backgrounds. If you add a CRT shader, it looks even better still IMO, though Duckstation doesn't have anything better than CRT-Lottes, so RetroArch may be a better choice for that. Either way, you can also add PGXP so the 3D doesn't jitter.

This is true.
I want to play the PS1 version of FFTs and want to know how many unit slots there is and all guides/answers I get are of the PSP version. Can't even get a guide for it as they get replaced by the psp version and then the Remaster will make it evem harder.

For some reason the gate guard wouldn't let me pass, and kept telling me the other gate went to Trueno. Either way, I already finished up Trueno and went back to Zidane's party.
>use gold chocobo to travel to Dali
>entering, Zidane magically looks like Garnet, and says "been a while since I've been here" or something similar
>he turns back to himself when entering buildings
>nothing new in the weapon shop, but can stock up on old items, doesn't matter either way since chocobo leaves
>entering the mayor's house causes the game to get stuck
And just cleared up to starting the Outer Continent. Got my chocobo back, so the world is wide open now. Will mess around with that tomorrow.

You need to come back a bit later and you'll be able to pass normally, no need for cheats. That quote from Garnet I vividly remember.. At first they only block passage to make sure the player goes in the right direction I think

I tried going all the way to that cave near Trueno and getting the treasures, then coming back, but he still wouldn't let me by. Dunno if that's a PC version with Moguri/Memoria mod running thing or if it was just glitched because I had been using the gold chocobo to do some exploring before I switched back to Garnet. Either way, I'm on the Outer Continent with my gold chocobo now, so it's time to break shit.
>was able to enter Ipsum's Castle, but couldn't actually go inside. Name failed to appear, and it was still marked as ? when I left
>entered Oeilvert, and promptly froze the game
>entered the back-end of the desert palace, was able to explore around and buy gear off the moogle(including fairy flutes) but couldn't exit back out or through the entrance, got stuck
>was able to enter Daguerreo and buy stuff and use the synth shop, and the chocobo didn't leave while I was inside
>was able to enter Esto Gaza and buy stuff, and the chocobo didn't leave while I was inside(tracks nearby so it didn't matter)
>was able to enter Lindblum and buy stuff and use the synth shop, and the chocobo didn't leave, which is good since I dunno if I could access the elevator in the castle or not
Just spent about a half million gil getting a bunch of stuff I shouldn't have yet.

Okay then maybe it takes to do something specific to open the way

Damn I really ought to replay FF9 so I could write a guy on the manner to safely fight Grand Dragons that I found 2 decades ago (which includes going back to Dali)

>head back to Dali, can enter and buy stuff(mostly restocking leather hats, wrists, and whatnot for synth materials), chocobo didn't leave me behind
>finally head to the dwarf place
>guards already gone, I can head to the path
>check out black mage village
>it's already unlocked
>pass through the path to Madain Sari
>no sign of Eiko
>visit Iifa Tree
>sealed, moogle has message saying Mist is gone
>head back to Madain Sari, no sign of Amarant
I went too far and broke it. I think entering some of these places might be safe, but some clearly advance some flags. I tried to enter Alexandria to see if I could get back to the start of disc 3 at the least, like I was when I went there prior to Clerya, but Alexandria was already nuked. This save is well and truly borked now. One day I'll sit down and really mess around with this and see just where you can go without moving the game forward, but I got my FF9 fix for the year.
