Back then, this game, sitting there in my pile of 8 or so Dreamcast, it was something special. I only had so many games I could play so i appreciated them alot more.

These days, its just 1 game among thousands that are just a few clicks away. Its hard to really separate it from the nostalgia and give an honest opinion about it.

It is Jet Grind Radio in the U.S. and Canada, but the original title is Jet Set Radio. Just legally it couldn't be called that in North America.

Americans thought Jet Set Radio was too catchy of a title so they changed it to something worse.

naganuma's "music" sucked back then and still does now, i could never stand the soundtrack of this game t.b.h.

same goes for sonic rush which also bears the curse of naganuma's shitty sample hodgepodge.

It was always JSR in Japan. It was JGR in the west for legal reasons. As time passes and people are less worried about stepping on jewish IP toes, the original name took hold again in western minds.

Wrong, it was only JGR in America. The in-game station was still called Jet Set Radio though, and JSRF was always JSRF even stateside.

I want to like it more than I actually do. Art direction and music are top notch, goes without saying, but I didn't have fun with the gameplay. I found it too slow and often frustrating with having to go around picking up the spray cans and the minigame for the graffiti and feeling very imprecise with some jumps. I never tried the sequel, I heard it improved on some of this.

It's really a game about precision platforming and is very punishing when it comes to making mistakes. The game really shines once you get familiar with the maps and how you can move around in them, lots of shortcuts can be discovered by simply goofing around.

I liked JSRF better because there was more to do on your skates. JSR had a heavier emphasis on graffiti and it just didn’t hit for me. My preferred graffiti game is Marc Ecco’s Get Up.

It’s crazy how memed the soundtrack to these games are because in all honesty there are like 2 or 3 songs in each game that are catchy and the rest is obnoxious (despite what fanboys say). There are games with a better formula that give you songs to purchase in game and you can create a playlist from like 50 or so tracks so you have a way better chance of finding stuff you like. Works even better when they have a few different genres also.

Electric Toothbrush clears every other JSR song by a quarter mile, and Naganuma had nothing to do with that.

His "songs" are cacophonic nonsense, made even worse when people try to ape him and his style to horrific results (The soundtrack to Victory Heat Rally is a good recent example of this)

No idea, Phil Spencer has said that he tried to put it on the BC program for the newer Xbox consoles but it apparently wasn't possible.

Why is this game so popular?
Also, from just watching some clips, it's a shame Sega didn't perfect this camera system, for example the camera turning quickly instead of cutting to a new angle. It would be so much better than modern right analog camera.
